Race deck Phantom 16

Just thought everyone might like to know about this - a piece of history!

It's been in Salcombe for a while - even had an XR2 on it at one point - went very well!

Wrong! You're thinking of offshore - it never raced properly, but one of the previous owners put an XR2 on it, a couple of Phantom 18 stickers, an "A" number, and was going to go and race "A" class OCR with it (2 litre before it all changed).

Now you know!

A class offshore probably was 1 litre though!

Of course a race deck boat is ineligible for OCR so I can see where the confusion arose - I think he wanted to do a basic in it or something?

No he wasn't! you're not alowed a race deck in OCR, that's why I assumed 1 litre offshore.

I'm fully aware that 'A' OCR was 2 litre.

It's the old 'A' class III i'm not too sure about,, never actually seen one.

It had a a 2 litre on it and an A sticker - OCR is all he could have raced it in as offshore isn't 2 litre - I never said he was right, just what he did!

It was too small for 2 litre as well - hence the Phantom 18 stickers - he was taking the piss ok?!?!?!

A class was before CC boys,
The last effective one I remember was "Amber Gambler" which won the championship one year. It was a 1 ltr class though, Derrick Mortmer may have run it possibly but ciao whould be better on that one.
It died a death though lack of support, It shouldn't have as most sports boats of the day fell into this class. But who the Fek wants to run 80- 90 miles in a full offshore class III race in somthing between 13' - 15' in a force 4-5. No me was to bloody old even then !!!!!
There was class IV for that (grandad of OCR)

I have never seen the boat before, there were a few white race deck p16's but not with red screens. (unless off course its painted)

Methinks it may have raced up north, there was a popular series up there in the 80's for 1.3 litre boats and they were mainly using p16's, and injecting nitrous oxide into Suzy’s and yams, when not holding the picket line against Maggies troops.

BluFin is right, Derrick Mortimer last raced class 3A 1 litre in 1984 in his OCR boat, he would compete when OCR and offshore shared a venue, then do the OCR race in the morning re-fuel and head out to the class3 race in the afternoon. He was the sole competitor and unsurprisingly won the Championship. Even more surprising is that the RYA dropped the class from the calendar for 85!

Being the sad ******* that I am, took another look at the photos.
The boat did race in 1.3 L, in 1992, was called Newavon and was driven by a Welsh guy called Glyn Grayson, recognised the Bart Simpson cartoon on the transom (used to see it quite allot navigating for Roy Smith in Heavy Metal!)
Glyn lost his job during the season, which put an end to his racing, but his partner who navigated for him, went on to navigate a couple of seasons for Peter Wilson in his 1.3 l Argo Cat.

Right! I now remember seeing it at the UKOBA Liverpool race in 87!
