V8 outboard

Hi guys,
Does anyone know of a Johnson or Evinrude 300 v8 for sale??
It has to be the long shaft [20"] model.

Cheers.

Yeah, but they do make a VERY good mooring anchor!

I have to say tho' i'd quite like one in the garage just to look at, they are a right old monster.

I owned two of them at one stage, a matched pair of racing engines, ended up with them on a deal on a deal, were bloody hard to get rid of, but we did put them on a 26ft mono for a summer to have a play with, they had the offshore midsections with the big exhausts, made one hell of a noise, suppose they did attract the chicks!
i know where there is one for sale in NZ.

Last one I saw being used was on a 23' (I think) Frode mono - cruising round Stockholm.

Looked pretty good for pose value.

There used to be a pale blue P25 in Jersey with a single 300 Rude, like you say, pose value 10/10, but it went through propshafts like they were going out of fasion.

Certainly the few boats that raced with them over here were very un-reliable.

Remember the Whitmarsh Stapley cat and a Benito with a pair of them. Maybe some others.

Are they just to heavy power/weight ratio or what's "wrong" with them?
I sense some disliking of the V8´s??

I think the motor itself is supposed to be quite strong, if a little heavy, but the lower unit was never up to performance applications, I think the motor was designed for the large sport-fisher type boat in the US.

I would imagine the massive flywheel effect from a powerhead that big would put a whole lot of stress on the lower when it 'barks' and re-enters.

Any one remember Ray Bullman (I think) from Whitstable, many years ago he had a Johnson V8 on a P21 with a very large tubular outrigger, cant remember how well it went but it looked the part.

I thought the design of the engine was pretty much two V4's joined together (probably a little bit more complicated) - but in terms of components it meant they were using a crank / down shaft of similar proportions to the V4 - which then struggled with the extra power.

??
