WTB: Cheap Depth finder

What price can i expect to pay for a basic depthfinder to stop a repeat of yeterdays performance...lol

Does anyone have a secondhand one for sale or know the best place to buy a new one.

Yup I know but depthfinders far easier to read for everyone, I know how to read a chart but others on the boat dont so makes it easier/safer for all concerned to have something simple to read.

Sizer in time you'll realise the wisdom of Matts comments.

To seriously damage your prop by running aground you generally have to be moving quite quickly say 10 knots plus. As none of the Rivers around here have a speed restriction higher than that one must presume the damage happenned at sea.

A cheep depth sounder won't work at speeds much over 20 knots (if that) and also they don't look forward they just tell you the depth of water that you have passed over.

If for example you were coming in to the Itchen at low water and you were outside the bouy's you would run into Weston shelf, likewise at Hamble it would be the Hamble bar. If you were heading into these at say twenty knots then I don't think a depth sounder woul help.

As a general rule if you stay inside the Nav Bouys in the rivers or the Solent then you won't run aground or find a rock.

If you want to borrow a chart of the Solent to study then you are most welcome.

if you want a cheep depth sounder then don't ignore the Navman range or Lowrance . Plastimo make a nifty hand held one butt hat is only good a slow speed about 150 kwid should get you a reasonable one.

If you don't want to use Steel Developments re fixing/buying your prop then I have heard nothing but good words about Prop Revolutions in Poole

What prop is it! maybe someone has an old one knocking about


If you want to buy a depth sounder than my advise would be to buy a magazine called practical boat owner and scan through the adverts there are a couple of companies who have special offers on at times

You could also put an add on Ribnet (not striiring JF)

Twas the weston shelf you mentioned, scared most peeps on board as it made some right nasty noise and boat wouldnt really move!!

May give them a call, ill have to find the number, prop is off a Force 85 engine.

Cheers for that advise though, going down Alladins soon will pick up a chart for sure, everyone else will just have to learn how to read them too!

As I said before you are welcome to borrow a chart idf you want to buy them take a look at the A" size charts for the Solent. they come in a plastic envelope so they stay dry an there are 12 of them which cover all the Solent. 35 Kwid the lot I think

Whilst you are down there, (that's a phrase I've never said to a bloke before!) try and get a book called hazard of the Solent. It will give you a good idea of the trouble spots. I have read this book but chose to ignore it the other month when I ran aground at Stokes bay( I offer no excuse for this other than the fact that I am a part time tosser)

I am a great beliver in learning from your mistakes, if you can't learn from em there is no point making em, but they for sure aint cheep on a boat.

Sizer, for the money, Lowrance or Eagle. They are made in the same factory and just badged differently. Nitrogen filled and water proof.

They tend to stand up to club dive boat use better than anything else I can think of.

If your after a second hand one then check with Crayside Marine who always seem to have a few. Decent bloke, bought a trailer off him last month.

Chhers, I already bought the charts by the time this was posted but i got Stansford Chartpack with 10 charts in, seemed to cover a good range.

Lifejackets where onboard but not everyone was wearing them, I have a couple of new ones on order too, them small automatic jobbies.

lol...I do like to feel safe, especially on water, whilst i like it i respect it also as i cant swim for sh....

To be honest being able to swim wont help much as the distances involved are quite large so an LJ is a good idea.

If you carry lifejackets then wear em and don't let your passengers get away without wearing them.

Practical Boat owner is a good publication to start reading as it covers a lot of subjects and is geared to helping you learn about boat maintenance. Strangely enough this month they have a section on the mainenance of lifejackets which is worth a read

of the advertisers I note that Mailspeed marine are selling the gArfmin 100 rib and fishfinder for 89.99 poonds......theye are also selling auto lifejakets at 2 for 90 kwid and a Silva portable HVF

I take no pride in the next writing the next few paragraphs
It actually was in Lee on the Solent that I ran aground near the sailing club about a hundred yard s from the shore. It was a hideous day and I had come closer to the coast to find a bit less turbulent water. the sky was very grey and we were in the middle of a nasty hailstorm and I failed to see the two yellow crosses on poles indicating there might be an underfkknwater obstruction under the fkknwater between the two fkkn poles.

This was the first day of a new bit of corporate work acting as a radar target for a technology company and the project manager was on board ( of course) and we'd we'd had a really hard day.

About two minutes after running aground all the water had disapeared and we could see that we could walk to the sailing club slipway. He also announced that he lived in Hill Head and that his nipper could come and pick us up in his car and drive us back to Saxon Wharf. I took the keys from the boat , anchored into the sand and off we trotted carrying a load of gear with us.

We then got back to Saxon and Jasper was waiting with Marie to go and get the other boat and guess what no fkkn keys. It turns out I'd dropped them in the carpark at Lee on the Solent so the boat had to be towed back and not driven.

Any chance I had of keeping it quiet was messed up when I got home and the fkkn gArfish had come to visit us

Funny how certain peeps turn up right on time!!!

Oh and it's a hedge Waver. A HEDGE. Must buy you a thesaurus.

And they've cut it . So the roadname is visible for the first time in two years...

So if you're passing it in Bugle Billy, trim out and turn hard to port...you might clear the wall back into the sea at high tide
