Talking Free Carbs

Mercury high performance carbs as pictured above taken from 1997 XR2 free to collector when you buy the cross drilled manifold and reed blocks for £150.

WH20's are one of the many types of Mercury dual bowl carbs.
There were also WH15's, 22's, 28's, 31's, 41's, 46's and so on and so on. Then there were the later single bowl pumper carbs and there were loads of them too.

I understand that the "single bowl" carb's were fitted to the 6 cylinder 135 (2ltr) and were a load of crap!

What's about WH20's

But what the hell is a "mod VP" carb ,,,,,,,,,,,, anybody ?????

WH20's are early 80's 2.4 carbs. These and the WH15's that they replaced had bigger bores than the later dual bowl carbs. The later dual bowl carbs were more refined and so had a better idle and were more economical etc. but for out right top end power (and emptying your fuel tank quick ) you'll have a job to beat the big bore WH15's and 20's. The 20's are the better of the two and are quite sort after in the states.

The WH15's came on the '80 2.4 V6 225 (225hp at the crank so its a 200 in todays money) and the 20's came on the '81. I think the mod vp's and early carbed BP's had WH20's too but I may be wrong about that.

The 2.5's had the single bowl carbs WMV-XX's and WHM-XX's (where XX is some number or another) I think some had accelerator pumps and some didnt but I dont really know.

Some carbs had just WH (dual bow) or WHM (single bowl) with no number, these seem to be the ones that came with the XR2.

As I said earlier Mercury made lots of different carbs over the years and so it can all get very confusing when asking how the carbs of an XR2 compare with those off a 200 for example.

Could be dude but unfortunatly probably not so much over here as no one really builds hot 2.4's

I guess with the right jets they could go well on Karls XR2 (or even yours) what sort of condition are they in.

Yeah they are and they're better low down than 20's but they're not big bores so not so good on the top.

I've got a set of those WH carbs I need to fit to my V6.
Any idear what jets should be fitted to these?
I've looked at the main jets, 0.76. Is this correct? My single bowl carbs (WHH) have 0.64 jets fitted.

Plus there's loadsa other jets in the WH's, Any idear what the original sizes were?
