clears are designed to go over basecoats either metallic/solid base,not over straight gloss coats,it has been done and like mr rob says it will eventually shell off,baes coats either metallic/solid...

if your painting it red then going over with...
if your painting it red then going over with clear,put down a solid red base coat or add a basecoat converter to solid red-non basecoat to convert it to a basecoat,let flash off,tack off with base...
