UIM Around Ireland Powerboat Record.

The present UIM Around Ireland Powerboat Record will be challenged this weekend (weather permitting) by IMPERATOR RIB SCOTTISH RACING TEAM, Carrying a SPOT tracker, progress can be viewed on their website.
http://www.imperator-rib.com/

The current record is held by Phillip Fitzgibbon and Mike Shanahan who set the record in October 2009 in a 7.5m Tornado RIB fitted with a Suzuki 250. Their record is 18 hours 38 minutes and 50 seconds.

"Leave Ireland and all its islands excluding Rockall to starboard.
The distance is approximately 704 nautical miles”

Imperator Rib Racing Team Scotland
Bit of a major setback whilst rounding Northern Ireland, Secondary fuel tank developed a leak so the Team aborted the attempt for safety reasons. Team headed back to home port of Largs. Gutted!
All crew safe and well but happy in the knowledge on well the craft performed before the mishap, at the speed they were doing it could have being possible to break 15 Hrs.
Rest assured though they be back on another weekend once the diesel is removed & they get a tank that's up for the challenge.
The team want to thank everyone for the support given so far.
It’s now back to the Drawing Board for Gordon, Mike, Dino & Rachael.
But on the Emerald isle, this record attempt has generated a lot of interest and it’s amazing how many were watching the tracker. I am already receiving calls praising how well Gordon and his crew were going and wondering/working out just how much they were going to smash the record by. Lots of pens and calculators out last night, I am sure last night generated enough of interest that the thinking caps are out.
Whilst the Record stays safe for now, it’s only a matter of time until it’s broken.
Who’s next up for the challenge?

Do you think that they could have maintained the 48kts for the entire course? That suggests they were not planning to refuel so I guess that means they were carrying around 1500 litres of diesel? - messy below decks now eh!

Team Dreamer aborted - seems they encountered the wrong sort of (tall) water.

Team Dreamer's skipper Philip Fitzgibbon would like to thank everybody for the support show for the record attempt and especially Waterworld Dive Centre on the Marahees for the lovely Breakfast that they provided to the crew when they came ashore.
Although the record wasn't achieved on this occasion, he wants all to know that Sunday morning test ( ha ha) from Kinsale to Marahees went very well and the Team are looking forward to their next outing.

So two attempts in as many weeks from two experienced crews, even though there is no success yet it is only a matter of time until the record is broken. Well done to both Team imperator and Team Dreamer and we look forward to the next chapter in this saga.

Sadly I have to announce that the attempt has been aborted due to Engine Manifold Failure. But the Team will be back again soon!

The same fate that Grey Ghost encontered in Roses en route to Monte Carlo.

Hopefully it wont cost as much as theirs did with the special deliveries to Spain over night !!

We put into Portrush (the Start) later that day for lunch - lots of buzz about the RIB even then. Sorry to hear they had to pull out again.
