So is this going to be a true "cannonball Run", or just a rally around the coast?

This is not going to be Rally, far from it. It's down to the teams as to what they want and that will be discussed between us and them but basically the gun is fired at West Lepe and we see them when they return in 7 days. How they get round is up to them but they will have tracker systems so everyone will know where they are at all times. No rules, no regulations just good, proper, basic seamanship rules.

Probably a lot of heartache and or a lot of fun (as with RB2008) but one excellent adventure. That's our definition of a Cannonball Run, an excellent adventure - it needs to be done and will be!!

Mike, if you are sending the details by email can you include me on your list. Love the idea, just not sure if a 'free for all' would be permitted here in Australia!

Cheers, Adrian...

I am sure that everyone would like to see some RIB manufactures enter this event just to prove their boats can handle 1500nm's of rough offshore running.

Won't hold our breath though. Boat manufacturers are notorious for not taking part (risking their reputation?) in events such as this although probably Scorpion are the exception.

The question is though, would you buy a boat from a manufacturer who could boast that their craft completed 1500nm's round the U.K. in seven days? I would.

I would disagree Mike, in the format of not racing and more endurance cruising and offshore challenges I know of a number of Manufacturers that have got behind and built special boats for these type of events, not just for the magazine but for their own Factory teams.

These have included Ribcraft, Ribquest, Delta, Zodiac Hurricane, Shearwater, Ribeye, Humber, Redbay to name a few, all of which have successfully completed Round Britain and Round Ireland circumnavigations, maintaining good speed with very experienced crews.

In fact I am talking to one right now regards building something to support this event and raise funds for Great Ormond Street. I would hope that these various builders get behind you as they have on other events and support a great adventure. They may not read Boatmad however so may be worth posting on Rib.net or sending something to Powerboat & RIB to circulate if you already haven't. Hope all support it and it attracts lots of entries due no crippling entry fee's.

Point taken Tom but it's not been my experience in Marathon. So I look forward to being pleasantly surprised.

Very true in marathon Scorpion lead the way. Hopefully Goldfish, arctic blue and others will rejoin and enter this great event. Will keep you up to date with our own personal plans of entering.

200 + miles per day for 7 days is going some depending on the boat and weather conditions of course.
I would be interested to see what types of boats are going to go for this and I wish you all the best of luck.
It will certainly be an adventure.

200+ mile legs are no big deal especially when you look at what happened in the RB08. There were several legs of that length - including the one across the Irish Sea - and yet ALL boats of all types would complete those legs well within their time limits including several single engined 8M RIB's and several old slow Fairy Huntsmen!!

Thanks for your kind wishes.

In 2001 we did the circumnavigation in boats of 4m in length, with the longest leg being over the top of Scotland of 230m. Cheesy video as very outdated now and the challenge was never about speed, however does show the route and that small boats, when properly prepared could enter and successfully complete the challenge. Meaning that Mikes event is suitable for all budgets, big and small.

Meeting of ALL teams taking part in the longest and toughest offshore powerboat event to take place this year and probably for quite a few years, is to take place on Saturday 7th February. If you intend taking part and haven't already registered for this meeting then PM me now!!
