Hi Sam, Thanks for your message on FaceBook - It is definitely an honour to receive that trophy on behalf of everyone involved. It would be great to know more about the trophy and how it came about?

so the race , the first muster was good no problems second muster not so easy spectator boats all over the place who even follwed us all on the yellow flag so start seemed like 50 boats plus , as the pace quickened and the swell grew they soon vanished ! green flag down and of we went into some lumpy waves the lead pack got away well our plan was to just finish the race and try to keep up with the pack if we could , boat went well through the rough but every now and again a rouge big one which would catch you out ,went tight to both headlands to avoid the wind and tides realised dean was just ahead of us on our starboard side and could still see the lead boats , the headlands had some nasty waves around them and struggled to get the props to bite , went towards weymouth for flatter water and able to increase the speed and get more from the props, ran up the back of portland which was very pleasant, expecting the bill to be rough but wasnt to bad started to take a bit of a line into lyme bay going down towards westbay to see if it was better it was a bit but knew we were behind and werent gaining enough speed to make it worth while so changed back on course for teighnmouth, conditions improved once in line with beer head and able to throttle it up some more and bring up the tabs ,still the odd wave would catch us out , had one senior moment and went airbourne and forgot to throttle off which my brother said do that again and ill stop steering shall i ??? as we got nearer to teignmouth it really flattened of and dean appeared on our port side slowing he gave thumbs up as ok ,then saw 2 rossters of the cliffs of dawlish and wondered why only 2 where were the rest , went for more up trim for more speed and realised the trim pumps had failed on both drives so drives stuck in neutral trim , oh well at least we had some speed for the run back , but we knew it wouldnt be flat for long , so tabs had to go down to settle the boat in the following sea which didnt make for a perfect ride but as lighter on fuel it wasnt to bad , now couldnt see any boats infront so just settled down and enjoyed the trip back to portland again getting more lumpy all the time just before portland saw jon and nick in swipes under way but slow portland was ok tabs had to go down more to keep it level and get some bite but it was ok waves getting bigger again on the headlands , guessed needles would be bad but wondered how it would be with drives up and tabs down and try not to stuff , there were some real big ones in the needles run hard to keep the boat running without the drives , then into the solent at last a bit of flat water and able to open the boat up again , chequred flag wow great to finish yipee into the harbour and had no idea we were 3rd until martin n told us even then we thought he was joking as it felt like we were alone out there !! really good race tough on the body but well worht it all .

A big thanks to john moore and all of his crew for putting it all on fantastic!!

Would not be surprised if The Targa & older Hot Lemon are "it" for now.
Mike has raced for a lot of years, & besides, he does, I think, enjoy the challenges of safety boat duties in "interesting" locations !
Having said that, I think HL might be out for the Lymington Challenge.

Cowes 2012 Final

I would like to thank everyone for coming over to Cowes and making it a very special weekend.

In these times when money is short, the weekend made a brief respite from the daily doom and gloom.

I am very proud to have once again met old friends and new and helped in a small way to put on another Cowes event.

Red Jet Start Boat

Big thanks to my son son Harry who looked after a young lady on the Red Jet.

She took the wrong boat at West Cowes and thought she was off to Southampton.

She enjoyed the Start - So less complaints than other years.

The makings of the John Mace Design Trophy

One Christmas, when I was but a wee sprog, my mother got me to nick a set of plans (Enfield Avenger) from Dad's briefcase which she managed to get copied over the holidays - from that we had a wooden model made and mounted which Mum then kept in hiding for my father's next birthday. Needless to say he loved it and it took pride of place on their mantelpiece for years. A while after John died, my mother decided to retire to The Canary Islands and again the wooden model was set up in full view there.
When I was clearing the house in Lanzarote after her death in 2009 the model was of course one of the first things I packed to keep. It wasn't until finally receiving the trunkfull that I'd shipped home to Mexico and unpacking the model again that the idea occurred to me that it would be nice to honour my dear father's creativity and dedication to the power boating world in some way. I was put in touch with a foundry in Mexico City who are rather good at copying things (!!!) and so I took the wooden model down to them and, far from simply accepting the job, upon seeing how important the whole thing was to me, offerred to guide me through the process so it would actually be I who create the bronze copy.
The next issue was did the power boating powers-that-be want a new trophy and would they accept this small bronze in John Mace's memory?
I initially wrote to my family's dear friend TP who made all the right noises and channelled the emails to the right folk and I was very happy to receive positive responses all round from the BPRC etc., and so set to work at the foundry with the idea of having it ready for the 50th anniversary race in 2010.
I made 2 bronzes, the best of which now sits atop a slab of Guatemalan green Tikal marble and will do the rounds after each Cowes-Torquay-Cowes race. The 2nd bronze and original wooden model are both here in Mexico.
Each year I send a photo of the John Mace Design Trophy winners to the workers at the foundry and it is as much a thrill for them to know they helped to produce the bronze and to see it being held proudly aloft as it is for me to know my father's name was heard once more at the RYS, Cowes as another designer's genius is recognised!
This is a good opportunity for me to offer a massive thanks again to Tim Powell, John Moore, Laura Levi for coordinating the UK end of my little project and for making my visit to Cowes in 2010 such a perfect and memorable experience.
The rest of the story you are seeing for yourselves, with Don Shead fittingly being the first recipient, Adam Younger last year and your good self Cookee in 2012. Many thanks for your interest - best, Sam.

Enjoy the glass of red John! I think you helped in more than just a small way. If it wasn't for you and the other folks behind the scenes there wouldn't be a race, so the competitors and fans alike owe you a huge debt of gratitude.........chiz!

John,
Thank you, again, for your hard work in this years event.

Particularly enjoyed watching the start from the red jet and note that, almost without exception, everyone had a chance to watch the boats for a decent amount of time from the top deck.

Cheers
Matt
