Phoney Phantoms (in this case Chaudron)

you really seem to have a grudge against Chaudron...looks like you have never been in one...what I can say is that I have been in a "real" Phantom 28, there is one in Malta, and I can say that it is a great boat, which I believe compares well to the best boats in the US. The Chaudron 28 is a better boat in rough water which is what you will always find in offshore waters (due to it being heavier), whereas I think the Phantom would be a better boat in calm seas..both great boats though

the chaudrons are very well built, as are the phantoms for that matter, as I said the problem with the phantom 28 from what i can see in Malta is that it is too light and flies high out of the water in big seas which slows it down a lot...I can take out my chaudron 33 in force 4 seas and drive at full throttle without much effort..also been out in force 6 seas but that is a bit frightening though the boat handles the rough sea very well

That statement quite simply isn't true!

A lighter boat will run better in most any conditions, Maltese included, any boat you've been in that runs badly is almost certainly due to poor set up, or driving.

If the 28 in question were set up to to run fast in all conditions, it would have a significant bow ballast tank to shift the C of G when required, but increase the weight by the minimum to achieve this, thus maintaining the lightest possible total weight.

Your 33, had it been designed & built by Steve baker, thus light, and probably just as strong, if not stronger than it is, would have run just as well in the rough, or better, and closer to 80, than the 65 it currenty runs.

you're most welcome on this forum, but please don't make the mistake of expecting support for the Chaudron product here on this British site, as we have little sympathy or time for 'design theives, and as Mr chaudron appears to build an entire range of boats that are quite clearly 'splashes' of Phantoms, taken without the consent of their British designer, he would appear to be just that!

Jonny who said mine runs 65?? At the moment it is almost touching 74 mph GPS, with the addition of more setback it should run around 75 mph. This with only a total of 600hp, less hp than your 28 which 5 feet shorter, much lighter and more than 3 mph slower. What you say about lighter being better is not so in practice, without taking anything away from the high quality product of Steve Baker. The best example was in Powerboat P1 this year with Chaudron 33 with twin 250EFI vs Buzzi Bullet, the British RIB with twin Mercury 300x which has ballast tanks like you said. The Chaudron beat the RIB (which is at least 5 mph faster) on both occasions (once in Malta and once in Sardinia) where both boats finished the races and were not hampered by engine damage. Another classical example were the 20 year old aluminium CUV's trashing the much faster and lighter Donzi.

As for the 33 being a splash, Steve Baker never made a boat larger than 28, the deck is totally different as well, so I fail to see your argument there.

How much does your boat weigh? mine weighs over 3 tonnes, over half of that is the V8 diesel engines n rigging, prop shaft power output is 300hp, are yours 300X's? (317 prop shaft hp)

I never said to Chris mine runs 65, typing error maybe if you are saying I said so, even the 33 with twin 250's runs 70 mph. If the phantom 28 weighs 3 tonnes, Baker did not build light, he built heavy. The 33 weighs in that range, a little less than 3 tonnes, which is typical of a boat that size. But the 28 which is in Malta is much lighter than 3 tonnes.
I will not say anything about "Mr Chaudron" knowing more or less than Steve Baker, what I can say is that Steve Baker was a great designer, one of the best, and his hull has stood the test of time so well. The Maltese guy does a great job building his boats as well.

As for your statement that Chaudrons 28, is a superior boat to the original it was splashed from, well, when your Mr chaudron manages to design his own boat, and build the plug, and 30 years on, people are still stealing the design from him because it's so good, then maybe he'll get some respect from us brits, untill then, he's just another nob who copied someones design because he was unable to produce his own!

Chaudrons may well be very strong, but frankly a monkey could build a strong boat if he's not trying to build it to a competitive weight, just pile in a load more glass!...easy, even for a fool.

For the record, I think the chaudrons look very nice.............BUT you cant simply steel someone elses product, do it in a different colour & call a differnt name and expect to pass it off as your own
