747 engine question
As there are a few people on here associated with the aviation industry, maybe you could answer a question that's been buggin me.
Whats with the engines on the 747 thats usually in the background on the Top Gear test track?
Both engines on each wing are mounted together, why's that then?
Anybody?

Hi
It was a mock up for a james bond film , Fictionally Registered N88882 the outboard engines had been replaced with Outboard wing Tanks while the inboard engines had been replaced with mocked up twin plyon-mounted engine pods under each wing near similar to those on the B-47 Stratojet
This is actually a Boeing747-236B reg G-BDXJ

Normally they would be JT9D's Pratt & Whitney, RB211 Rolls Royce
or the General Electric CF6, this is the best one IMHO. JT9D's tended to overfuel & surge a bit in the early days at top of decent.

These are the Rolls Royce RB211s on this aircraft and was with British Airways until 2002 (City of Birmingham)
Was used on Scrapheap Challenge when contestants knocked up towing vehicles.
Used also on Fifth Gear being towed by a VW Toureg
and James Bonds Casino Royale
Owned by Aces High now and used mainly for film and TV work

Yeah your probably right, perhaps I should first try the simple more down-to-earth performance enhancing mods like bolting on some superchargers, adding nitros and chilling the fuel with Co2 to -20 before going onto jet engines...

Much better is the T-58 or Rolls Royce Gnome engine with a Rolls Royce speed decreaser gear with a 3.25-1 reduction and an SCS crash box
Engine starting at about 6 grand
