South Westerlies predicted for Ramsgate - 15mph. Theoretically this means mostly the wind is comming from the land onto the sea, BUT a large amount of swell will be comming up from further down the South East coast, so could be a nasty race.

Hopefully my boat repairs will be finished by Friday evening, then change starter motor, repair air vent system, replace battery and we should be good to go.

Also hope that new helmets and intercom system will arrive in time, as the RYA decided at Poole that Communica helmets no longer meet the standard for racing. ( someone tell the RNLI and Royal Airforce... )

south east swell

VT could you please clarify:- The way I see it Ramsagate is on the most south easterly tip of the uk ( as near as it makes no difference) so how can there be big swells coming in from further down the south east coast?

As far as I see it,

Ramsgate is on the most northern part of the south east bit of coast, with land to the west, and sea to the east.

So wind comming in from the west or south west should be blowing over land then onto the sea, creating a calmer condition.

BUT

The coast south of Ramsgate has sea to the south west and west, and thus winds will be blowing over the sea for days prior to the event. ( the winds are blowing as we speak! )

Then Ramsgate is the tight point in the bottle neck between Europe and England - thus a tide will rush up the coast from the south west, bringing its swells with it.

So - in theory we may have long swells due to the tide bringing up the SOUTHERN most section of the South East wind waves.
