Media Players
Can anyone recommend a network media player?
I need a device that can play divx, xvid etc via either 10/100LAN or wifi from a network drive.
It must not require me to re-code all my vids or need server software installed on my PC - like iTV and many others appear to. I just want to connect to a network drive and play what's there.
Must have av out.
Something like this, but a bit more basic - don't need dvd and various other features tha one has.

Matt, Do you have ntl cable?
I recently bought a dbox (check ebay) - and its awesome, is network attached, I can run some movies straight accorss the network - some I have to run VLC on my desktop pc, and then browse from the dbox interface to play a movie from there. Also has music player in it.
On the cable side, it lets you record all programs... and theres a lot more it can do too!

Have you tried a search on Ebay under PVR? Worth a look if you haven't

Well I've just bought a mod chip for my xbox so lets see if I can get it running as a media player. "If" it works, the spec says it does everything I want it to do.
I took a look at VLC as well. Aside from the fact that it's standard interface is very non intuitive and the skin interface is klunky, the backend code is really tightly written and very powerful. As an example, my oldish PC can't quite run an HD avi file using media player or the divx player, but vlc can play it easily. The streaming functionality is also really good if you need it.

Yeah, VLC is very powerful, has a web interface to it too.
only one of my HD movies (monsters inc), which was recorded from Sky HD using the x264 codec that VLC can't play. It plays everything else i've thrown at it though
If you've got the knowledge, you can also use its api, and make your own interface for it too, which I started doing to make my own media box.
I am going to install windows on my miniitx soon, and see how well VLC runs on that... if its good, I might finish my interface Failing that I guess ill try it with linux too
