Rant...

I've bought an ex-mod Leyland Daf truck.. I know, Iknow, I know it’s a problem I have and I’m seeking counselling. Anyway, it’s a 1995 and I bought in preference to a Bedford MK/MJ because of the spare part back up being better than the Bedford. Most parts are available from LDV, via your local dealer, I’m informed……Yeah, right! It’s got a rumbling Transfer box… Ooo errr..missus…. so I thought I’d sought that out easily. Box stripped down and looked over. Gears look good and very well built so it’s just a case of replacing the bearings and seals. I might as well do ‘em all to avoid having to do it again. So, with my list of bearing and seal numbers I get in touch with out bearing suppliers. Out of 10 bearings…

“7 are in stock, 2 will be a couple of days and we’ll get back to you about the 10th “

Great..! So out come the bearings…..

“Ah, sorry Sir, the 10th bearing is obsolete, you’ll have to go to the vehicle manufacturer”…

Great…..

“Please Mr Leyland I’d like an XYZ bearing…”

"Sure, Son, that’ll be £585 and we don’t have ‘em in stock and we don’t know when we’ll get ‘em in”

Great….

Ok, contact the transfer box builders in Germany....No worries..

“Please Mr Gertrag where can I buy an XYZ bearing from for a transfer box you built in 1995?”

“Sorry, Son, we don’t build them anymore and we sold all the spares to Leyland Daf”

Great…..

So in the light of the enormous help that our Leyland Daf spares man has been I thought I’d try my luck with the seals…

“Please Mr Seal supplier can I have XYZ seals?”

“Sure, Son, no problem as you have the original manufacturers details we can ring ‘em up and have you sorted toute-bloody-suite”

Great, good news at last…

“Sorry, Son, those are protected parts and we can’t supply you with them”

WTF!!! Are they armaments? No. Are they explosives? No. Are they vital to national security? No… They’re just bloody oil seals FFS……!!!

So what now? The MOD still have a huge amount of these vehicle so they must have spares somewhere….think I’m gonna raid the local TA Royal Engineers workshops tonight..

It does NOW....after it's little trip across the workshop..... The worst thing is that, because I know what sourcing parts can be like, I took the bearing number off the outer race, before pulling the inner off the shaft, and confirmed that they were a standard item... all hunky-dory so out comes the "big puller"... Ooo Err Missus.. and heave-ho.... bearing 10 does one.. and is fecked in the process... never mind, I've got the replacement ready.. hang on… what’s this? A different number on the inner race… Oh goody! Back to the bearing supplier…. Oh yes… SKF did that occasionally…… F***k!!!
…and guess what? All other bearings popped off with no problems at all…….

Yes please !!! I've got a line on a "Chinese" copy, but I'd be happier with a decent one... Military part number from Army Equipment Support Publication 2320-H-104-711 is 900.9.0100.73 (FBU4394). The number in brackets is recognised by LeylandDaf too... Any help gratefully received...

Feck, feck, feck!!!

Little up-date… Finally got all the parts sourced and ready. All new bearings all new seals. I am now the world’s expert on alternative parts for Gertrag military transfer boxes…….

So.. I build the darling up, slowly and, although I say so myself… meticulously… All new bolts.. the whole nine yards…. Anyway….. fit the front output shaft housing… torque the old girl up to 750 Nm and…..and… feck! There’s play in the output flange…Noooo…. This can’t be happening to me!..Ok, Ok…calm down ..and breathe…… right.. let’s run through it again… what have I done wrong?…

Pull her apart and.. being a bit cautious, fortunately I’d bought two of every spare… just in case….. right put another new bearing in the housing and re assemble…. I’m getting good at this… I reckon I can pull one of these boxes down and get it back together in about two hours flat now…

Right.. torque the sucker up ..and…… double bollocks…. Still got play in it….! Calmly put tools away.. clean bench and go to boat show instead…….

So, this morning.. on the blower to H.L Smiths who recondition an awful lot of military transmissions and kindly offered to look at mine and tell me what a numpty I’ve been,,,,,,

Leave box with them and drive back to work…….

“Jono.. It’s Andy at Smiths”…

“Yeah?”

“Your transfer box?”

“Yeeeeees?”

“They all do that mate…it’s the design”..

“ Oh… good…. I’ll come and pick it up shall I?”

Moral of the story.. no matter how clever you think you are.. or how skilled a mechanic/engineer you think you are… you just can’t beat experience….

I’m off for a lie down now……

Has the rumble gone, or do they all do that by design as well?
