So there I was, sorting through a pile of mags whilst eating my frosties, when I spy this letter from a young Lawrence!

Here it is OCR'd for those with dodgey minces!

DISAPPEARING SKI BOATS
Dear Ed
I am 23 years old and a newly qualified
mechanical engineer who has become
accustomed to watersports through his
childhood. Indeed, my father has just proudly
taken delivery of his new Hardy 42 and my older
brother recently chose to get rid of his elderly
Ring 21 for a Beneteau Oceanis 390. I presently
own a slightly more humble Fletcher
Arrowstreak with a 200hp Mercury from which I
get a great deal of pleasure. I am and ardent
reader of your magazine and have particularly
enjoyed some of your more recent features, such
as increased coverage of skiing and racing and
the switch from continual boat tests of American
products. I was especially interested in your
factory visit to Littlehampton and talk with Mike
Ring, your article on hull design and the Bridge
to Bridge piece. For some time now I have been
toying with the idea of purchasing a new 17-19
foot ski-boat, or at least a newer boat in the
guise of a Phantom, Ring or similar. It seems to
me that everywhere I go people are so interested
in these boats and they have generated some
decent discussion on the forum but reliable
information seems difficult to find.
I have contacted Mike Ring, Steve Baker from
Phantom, Mike Vincent from South Coast Marine,
who has old 15 and 17-foot Ring moulds and
Clive Jones of CJ Marine in London, who recently
purchased the Phantom 18 mould and have had
the following feedback: Ring have destroyed all

tooling for craft under 21 feet. Why? Phantom
still have 19, 20 and 21-foot moulds. Do they
plan to produce? Or are they planning to build
their new RIBs? South Coast Marine and CJ
Marine inform me that their boats are not CE
certified and so can only legally be manufactured
for racing purposes such as OCR. Does that
mean I cannot purchase one? And what would
my position be regarding insurance etc.?
I think that some investigation on the magazine’s
part would make a great article and I think that
fast pleasure seekers, perspective racers and
existing OCR members alike would floc
it.
As you can see, I am both passionate
boats and frustrated that I can’t purcha
British 18-foot sportsboat of this type.
In short, everybody knows where to pu
Bayliner, SeaRay or similar craft. Other•
Fletcher or Picton, information on dom
builders is hard to come by, please hel
Lawrence

Dear Lawrence,
Help is on its way. We already had plar
article along similar lines but your lette
prompted us into a thorough, investiga
search. We have a feature on David Pic
designeç coming up in December and•
of Fletcher’s racing heritage in January.
‘A Bernico in the making’ from GB Marl
at Peterborough, in the waterski racing
over the winter months and ‘how to pri
your ski boat for racing’. We realise ther
considerable interest in this type of boa
prompted by your letter, will step up ot
coverage.
