Limit Up (80)

Did Mike have this boat built?
I know that it became Peter Stuyvesant 2 for the '81 season.
From the Ciggy 35 thread Graham (Flying Fish) says that it became Gentry Turbo Eagle.
Has it been in any other guise?

From what Tim has told me, the boat was built for Doxford, first race out it split, and somewhat of a row ensued regarding the construction - and other things!

Toleman ran it at Windermere in Oct 1982 and ran average 110.4 mph, setting the then Class One record.

Further adventures of LU cat

The caption for the crash pic states `this was the end for the 10yr old boat`.

Some doubt re the 82 Windermere boat.82 London-Calais states it was boats debut.Same looking boat for Windermere and LCL.Did Needles 81 hole finish it off before Gentry bought it.

Peter Currington would know,but I`ve only asked him 4 times for clarification.This is what your`e up against trying to piece together offshore history.I`ll be the`Victor Meldrew `of archiving before long ,I just know it.

When the Doxford / Peter Stuyvesant sponsorship came to an end in 1981, the good people from Aylesbury passed it on to Ted Toleman, although not before a good few UK racers tried to grab it first!

The wooden Cougar went in the same direction.

Pretty sure later that particular boat went to Scandinavia and died a horrible death. (Non Racing)

As for Gentry, I remember he ran an aluminium Toleman (owned) Cougar Cat in the US and bent it.

Mike and Tim did the '81 LCL. They hit some flotsum & jetsum which blocked the water intakes. The gearboxes caught fire around Gravesend.
It was then towed back to KG V dock for recovery..

Not sure what you are saying here Ciao.The yellow Limit Up cat as far as I know was not used in UK after 1981,and went to U.S.
A new stuyvesant cat was built for toleman in 82 and this you reckon met a nasty end in Sweden.Is this as you see it?
That Gentry hired alloy Toleman boat came 3rd in 82 New Orleans race,with Steve Stepp beating it into 2nd would you believe.Betty Cook won in her formula cat.

The Limit up cat was built new for Mike Doxford (not sure what year) its first race was Cowes were it was race by Mike Doxford and James Beard, the boat was very quick but the drives did not last, Mk3 drives mounted as a surface drive, Mike sold the boat to Ted, when Ted had finished with it it was sold to Tom Gentry, last time I saw the boat was in the late 80's when Gentry still had it.

Based on the PJC info i.e. Doxford sold the boat to Toleman,it appears that before it went to the U.S. it was used by Toleman in 82 & 83 with Stuyvesant sponsorship.Then Gentry had it in 84 (see red/white colour scheme in FF pic).
All this would mean that the LCL 1982 report which states this was it`s debut race ,could also be referring to the new Stuyvesant colour scheme or Toleman first use of it,and where Sweden`s nasty end comes into it it,lord knows.Another tangled web with some doubt there.

That was a quick boat back then remember this thread with TimB-C saying only with mods did this cat in 87 exceed 110mph before mods it was 90mph+ only

Were the class 1 regulations the same through the 70's and 80's, I know the diesel regulation changed in the late 80's due to the 4 diesel units Buzzi installed in the Mono and then the cat and obviously cat's had a weight penalty

It was, although my dad who watched it that week at Windermere, told me they had no end of problems with engine reliability.

The record was a last gasp thing after having new motors flown in from the States.

Having said that, the Class 3D Cougar, Aquaglide already held a Gold Star by that time! (Not sure what Jo used to do to those straight 6 Mercs!!)

I think the UIM rules were the same through the late 70's and early 80's.

Cougars hull development was prolific due to their stateside operation, and FB managed to find holes in the rule book.

I'm with PJC. I recall that the boat was new, and that they started the race late and had to go hell for leather to catch the leaders up, which they achieved if I'm not mistaken, only to break.

As this thread is related to Tim Powell, I guess this is as any, a good place to tell people that TP has beaten his latest illness.

Tests in The Royal Marsden showed that TP was 100% clear, aggressive chemotherapy and an incredible will to live beat the odds.

I suspect I will not be the only one looking forward to CTC '09 with Powell doing his stuff at prize giving.

I suppose it shouldn't come as a surprise that he has made a recovery, but I am certain that the whole of offshore racing has just breathed a huge sigh of relief and wish him all the best for years to come!

I thought Toleman's Cat was Aluminium which was new for '82.

Ok here is MY memory of the timeline-

1981 - The first year of Peter Stuyvesant sponsorship for UKOBA and a Class One team.

Team Sponsored : Limit Up

Boats Raced : 1 x Cigarette 1 x Cougar Cat (wood hull)

1982 - Stuyvesant sponsorship went to Ted Toleman.

Team Sponsored : Toleman Group

Boats Raced / Record Attempts : 1 x Bertram Mono 2 x Cougar Cats (Ali ((ex Toleman Group)) and Wood ((Ex Limit Up, Peter Stuyvesant)))

1983 - Stuyvesant concludes its 3 year deal with UKOBA, Ted Toleman's last full UK series.

Team Sponsored : Toleman Group

Boats Raced : 1 x Bertram Mono 1 x Ali Cougar Mono 1 x Cougar Ali Cat

1984 - Carlsberg sponsor Ted Toleman to do the 1984 Round Britain Race

Ali Cougar cat (Toleman Group) from 1981 was stretched in Miami, fitted with diesels, and then sunk in the Bristol Channel.

The same ali Cougar ran as Slick 50 (with a wing) when it set the Class One speed record in Southampton Water late '81

The wood Cougar ran Peter Stuyvesant colours under Doxford and Toleman.

Liveries were different however for 81 and 82.
