Went to see Miss Enfield2 yesterday. Still in great condition considering that she hasn't seen the light of day for twenty years. Obviously last ran with triple outboards but has a lovely pair of BPM aluminum block 500hp engines with quad carbs sitting just waiting to go. "Engines hardly used" said the owner!! No drives though.

Sorry, I don't have any. Those were the only ones Thomas (Tork) sent me after his short race in the back of Mr. Noisy at Cowes 2006

Miss Enfield 2 ?
Miss Enfield, British Buzzard, LPW High Tech Plating Race NO 51. , Blitz ! I fitted the gill bracket and twin
220 Yamaha's to this boat originally at Buzzard , Yarmouth, IW.
(Mike Kitcher/ Roger Allen.) I believe Tony the owner at the time took it to France,a really nice guy.. Was a bit of a proving ground for Yamaha and a forerunner to J&B with 3 x 225 Yamahas. Have several rigging photo's.
Will bring to event Sat.

MISS ENFIELD 2 Pics
If that boat goes racing again,a new breed of driver will be required to both steer and throttle .Guys of that ilke have long gone, although Mr.Shead used to be in the stbd bolster and lean forward to reach the throttles while TBS steered ,I have seen in photos.

I'd have said completely the opposite!!! The majority of current racers have come therough the ranks of 2 litre, Honda, OCR etc, and find it most unnatural not to steer and throttle.

Steering and throttling
Glad you edted your post to steering and throttling Mr.D,as opposed to navigating.I was about to ask what the other bugger did (throttling?).Why then is the norm for OPI to have a separate throttleman and driver.Take CIII etc out of the equation as throttling and driving as applied for years. Are we now in a situation where the smaller classes are going so fast that reaction times have improved,so if these drivers step up a class,we don`t need separate throttlemen.I just wonder if you ask the modern OP1 driver to throttle and drive ,what he would say.Even back in the early days the separate driver and throttleman was done for a reason.

Some of the boats I have raced in I have throttled, trimed, adjusted the fuel mixture, change gear and moved the fuel around the boat, it's a lot to do.
And have been in some boats with the owner has been steering and throttling and they have been useless at doing both.
As well in the "old days" the navigater had a lot to do as he don't have a GPS not aloud in the old rules.

My thoughts are that in the days of "gentlemen" racers, the owner didn't always have the skills to throttle and trim, but as we all know anyone can hold the wheel. So it was quite common to bring in a throttleman, whilst the owner did the easy job, and had the added kudos of being named as the driver. all IMHO of course.

It was interesting to hear Shelley Jory say that she was having a difficult time steering and throttling in those big seas during the last CTC race and had to ask the engineer, who was standing in the back, to come up alongside and do the throttling for her. It worked because they came home fourth!
And no sexist comments please
