1971 World Champion ?

Who won the 1971 World Championship? anybody know

Reason is th ad on B&O got me thinking who it was.

http://www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk/view/F91462/

Volvo? Dont recall any volvo winners around that time. There was no Class 3 c'ships at that time so it would have to be C1 or C2 With the former being Bill Whisnick with a red cig called boss-a-nova dont think its that somehow.
About the only british boats I recall were Easy Rider (Keith Dallas) & Volvo Penta (Chris Plumridge) both Avenger 21's with inboards around then?

but you poms claim anything as world champion, in the media for your class 1 boat the new driver is classed as a four times world champion!
since when driving a 225 Honda boat is a world championship class

the term "world champion" should not be used lightly and especially with Honda

World Champion as you quite rightly say is a much misused claim. The most guilty of course are the Americans IMHO who usually claim that status when the only nation taking part is - America!! Even the UIM championship, which would certainly have a greater claim to such a title, is not quite as all encompassing as the days when the World Champion did indeed travel the greater globe and compete against drivers of many nations. But then, those days are history!! (thinking South America specifically).

Not defending the comments, but it does say Honda formula 4 world champion (or similar) rather than just world champion, having said that, arn't they racing these in New Zealand as well now? Surely he waould have had to compete with them as well?

hey, it was a tongue in cheek comment I made, I just think that anytime "world champion" is used then it should have been earned, after all you guys are the current rugby world champions

Didn't Ray B run the cowes race with him that year, pulled up on the outbound run, rough as old boots too. But I did catch a couple of nice fish of Old Harry if I recall. Nice write up on it from MBY but long lost now. Ray day out not my fishing that is

Bosa Nova

Yep Bulman was navigator, they turned back as didn't need the points as Balestriere was ill so no competition and as they were spending more time in the air than on the water wouldn't of had enough av-gas left to get all the way around the course, I know we were out there over 9 1/2 hours and eventually gave in on the way back.
Roughest ever race..............Steve Macey came home 2nd???? Tom Culpan was co-driver father of Robin
