2008 round britain race

i was watching a bit of footage from the first leg of the 2008 round britain race earlier gunwharf to plymouth, the first few minutes of the footage shows a few shots of the boats from the air, and you can clearly see the underwater submarine defence barrier, a few minutes on one of my favourite boats the FPT ex GANCIA dei GANCIA, runs into probs and smoke starts comming from it, then they announce that it had a run in with the submarine barrier, i just wodered how, and how far below the surface the sub defence barrier is, any one know ?

That I recall, that bit it is above the surface every low tide - so very shallow.
In my sailing days, you would never ever go near there (unless through the channel) and lots of boats have been lost/damaged on it.

I think the area between the muster area and the barrier was pretty tight, so you didn't need to drift downstream much to hit it, as many boats did - just fabio had a rather more dramatic retirement than most.
With hindsight, I suspect mike would have liked to relocate the barrier for the race.

Red FPT with its 4 engines and lots of fuel sits very low at the stern and therefor I guess Fabio keeps moving while mustering. I remeber only to well being told by other boats to watch for the barrier. A few other boats did hit the barrier but sustained little damage.
Remember there were 2 starts and the boats kept drifting east towards the barrier during the long wait, Still a good navigator should of noticed rather large chuncks of concrete in the water.

The barrier was put in place to stop the Germans and eventually crippled the Italians and then Lyme bay done the Germans on the same leg.

Pithy comments as usual and very funny.

As usual I wanted to start the race as per previous versions - out at the Forts with a run down to the Pier, turn left and off. Told by the Queens Harbour Master no less to start at the Pier - no one made allowances though for the 4 knot current which was sweeping East! If it had been running West there would not have been a problem and Buzzi might have won, but the world is full of "if's".
There's a few "if's" I would like to happen in the CMC race right now!

For about half an hour prior to the start we were in the milling area just to the west of the barrier which could be very clearly seen by the naked eye and on your navigation screen, there was a strong tide towards the barrier. We pointed out its position to a number of competitors, some changed course to avoid it some took absolutely no notice and suffered the consequences. It does seem unbelievable to me that so called professional race teams haven't read their charts prior to the event so that they know what to expect.
