There is nothing like Open Ocean Racing....it was too good to die, somehow it will come back again. This kind of action was really addictive.

Nige....I brought a friend of mine who nagged me for years to let him ride in a race.
I told him all he had to do was run the stop watches.
The flag drops and we are off to the first checkpoint....as we round the boat, we are running third and I look over and he is frozen in place...hadn't moved since the green flag. His hands are locked around the grab bar and the watches are all still on zero.
If you were not ready for the onslaught on your senses, it must have been quite a rush.

I've never gone more than about 50mph on open water - I cannot imagine the experience of running 90mph in a vee bottom. Must be incredible. The speed, noise, everything - must be quite overwhelming!! Anyone got any onboard footage they can share?? And listening again to the Betty Cook interview - you forget sometimes how racers from yesterday were standing for 2 or 3 hours of body pounding - not sat down in (relative) comfort for an hour or so. No desire to undermine the skills etc of today's racers, but it was a completely different kettle of fish surely.....
another great pic by the way Charlie.

Thanks Nige....We have put up a lot of new photos on the HORBA website that shows just how rough some of these races were.....and remember even if you wanted to quit, you still had to drive your boat home.
Outboards especially did a lot of jumping back in the days.....
Sorry, can't seem to find the browse button to post another photo...?
