am I about to make a big mistake?

I have been given a fletcher Faro which once had a mercruiser 120 hp inboard. I also have a small block 289 V8 with VP 270 outdrive which would fit the hull, probably at least double the power but lots more weight. It seems like a fun idea but is this combination going to be a mistake?

Probably a good starting point would be to work out the difference in weight of engine drive combination new and old, then add another 30-40kg for strengthening. Dunk the boat in the water with 4 adults and the difference in weight in sand bags and see where the boat sits with the extra weight.

I suspect it will end up very arse end heavy and not very well longitudinally balanced is it quite a short boat. It will probably nod like a donkey, you could but ballast tank in the front, but with all the extra weight you will only end up with another 10-15 mph, for a lot of time and money.

Next I would be checking to see if the transom is waterlogged or rotten, as with the extra power you may need to strengthen or replace it. I suspect you would need to do a lot of strengthening to the boat with that much extra power and weight.

Probably really not a good combination, would be better in a Phantom 23/25

Just FYI. Faro get good money before you start to rip it to bits.. Relative to other Fletchers of similar age. You could sell that and get a whole lot more for the money. You could expect 3-8K judging by what they sell for. That's a lot towards another boat.

This particular Faro has been previously stripped, its now just a hull and seating, so not so valuable.
