BUT! This weekend I drove a Phantom 21 for the very first time. My second boat will be a Phantom now for sure
I drove the Crazy Elks one, beutiful boat! My heart is pounding for a Phantom now

Hi Andy,

Only 2 x SBM'S brought to the Island, the first was an 18 and raced as Hot Gossip with a 200 Merc, bloody quick in the calm but no good in chop, Gary Payne had that. The second was a 21 owned by Ricky Blatchford, a great bloke no longer with us. He ran a pair of bent 225 Mercs, one of which ended up on Top Gun.

Blatchy was a great man indeed! Why doesn't it surprise me that he had 2 bent motors on a 21 footer?

That was before he put a ZZR1100 bike motor in the Fiat 126

I had to take the heads off my motor once, you would not believe how far around the ports went

Sorry to hear about Ricky. I remember Bootlegger always did well in the rough. I remember going across to Cowes in 1981 for CTC and RTI, with Ricky and his SBM entered in 3D with the single 225 along with Pete Wilson and Derek Simpson with their 2 fletchers in 3B both with Yam 85s.

If you can find the video of the 1981 RTI (The one with John Clarkes Navigator sat in the engine well steering the boat with his feet) you will see a few seconds of Rick lying in about 3rd or 4th place ahead of a whole bunch of twin rigs, cats etc. (Brian Jones, doing the commentary calles him Robert Blatchford)An excelent performance until he split the hull soewhere off Ryde.

If I remember rightly, he then bought a lighter weight SBM Black Magic with 225.

I thought Jason Hunt also ran an 18 foot SBM Sigma with XR2 power in 1982/3? As we used to battle it out with him and Dave Trotter in the first Magician in our old Cougar.

Hi Guy, hope you are well.
I am getting a jacket with "I have a large black cougar" but the wife is not too keen.
I remember Jason running Sigma the Phantom and that strange multi hull Blagg that kept falling over in corners.
Come to think of it he even tipped his Skater over in Havelet so maybe driver error more than boat design!

Blagg Speedboat

Blagg speedboat is a deep V type boat with side balancing fins. From above it looks Quite normal. It is not. I have had one in use since 1983 about after buying it from the Blagg brothers. Fantastic boat.

It flies very wll in waves and I crouice normally about 35-40 kts with motors between 120 - 135 HP. My old 135 6 cyl Mercury died and I now have a more modern 120 Hp Evinrude.

Most of what i written about Blagg is unfortunately not correct. Will put in some photos later. It works very well and just now my son is running it with his kids waterskiing behind.

Just nosing thro some old threads on here on a lazy sunday morning and saw this thread,brought back some memories of all my floating exploits,here goes.SALTSURFER SPORTS 18FT,90 MERC......21 PHANTOM in Mariner colours 200 Mariner.20FT ALLINSON MERC XR2.....YELLOW RING 21 200 MERC....PICTON ROYLE BOWRIDER MERC LAZER 220.........PINK RING 24 MARINER COSWORTH 250.....BAYLINER 2450 CRUISER MERCRUISER INBOARD.....WHITE RING 21 200 MERC........SUNSEEKER MUSTANG VOLVO DUOPROP.....G.P.14 4HP MERC.....SAN BOAT 640 CENTRE CONSOLE 200 OPTIMAX.....640 QUICK SILVER FAST FISHERMAN CABIN 90 MERC,then onto a 55ft canal boat with 18hp diesal????Wasnt for us tho....YELLOW FLETCHER WITH TWIN 225 OPTIS......PHANTOM 25(EX AGFA BLUEBIRD)TWIN 225 OPTIS and still in me garage sadly engineless.......and just bought MON AMI a 2550 PURSUIT CENTRE CONSOLE/CABIN WALKROUND FAST FISHERMAN,rigging it with 2 125 optis,did want another RING from Mike,a 25 centre console/ Ring Ranger,sorry tho Mike cant afford it yet,still paying the price of divorce so maybe next year..........must say i have very fond memories of each and every one of my babies and cant wait to get back on the water...........that is all folks.

Nice list. Have to say we loved our ring ranger very much. We had a 6.2 350mag in ours and it was an awesome all round all weather, most conditions boat.

The Ring Ranger cabin version if scaled up to 30ish foot (drawings supplied) would be the last boat i would ever buy.............just saying like.Valhalla would be my next port of call in it.
