Broken Transom

Hi all, looking for some advice, picked my p20 up the other week, turns out the transom is starting to fail, looked okay when I bought it was my error, not experienced enough but learning, by my mistakes.

Anyway's only seems to be breaking at the top and bowing out with the weight of the engine and looks like it's splitting down the middle, bottom seems to still be strong.

I have had someone recommend putting aluminium plates to strengthen it up or would I be better off biting the bullet and getting it replaced?

What sort of price would I be looking at getting it replaced.

Cheers,
James

I will have drive up and have a look James

Ally plates will not do anything bar hide the fact it's there!

Do it properly the right way once and it's done!

I had a lad who owned and built reiver powerboats in the 80's and 90's to have a look at it and said it doesn't look rotten just it starting to break the ply but without further investigation couldn't tell.

Would it not be worth him investigating?
Sounds like the man for the job!

2 option put a brand new transom In or if there's is no rot beef it up a bit? As if you were going to race it?

Hard to say with out seeing it but with it bowing out it doesn't sound to clever

Tried getting him to do the job but he didn't want it unfortunately, he's getting on in his 60's now.

What would it entail in beefing it up?

Hmmm is it the picture or is the transoms bowed just sat there?

If so I would re do the whole thing

Best bet is to get someone to do it with you who has done it before!

Price wise I have no idea but just the marine ply and glass etc is expensive enough!

I'll have a word with some lads around here if you are willing to travel?

Take a core sample out. Even if you just drill a hole. If the wood is all wet its rotten and needs replacing. Big job... I've done two now but not on a Phantom.

And before you know it, your boat looks like this

The thing that caused my transom to break was the steel in the knees. Water came in there and made i rot. Do it properly and you have a Phantom that will last a nuclear bomb! Or even Guernseyweather

If it makes you feel better, I didnt drive my boat either untill my broke...

Loads of the information you need on the iboats forums. It happens a lot more than you'd think. Worth getting it sorted before the engine drops off !

I think a lot of damage occurs when you're towing so built a transom saver to save my old girl !
