Buying second hand boat from Europe

Hi all,
Was hoping for some help.
If I buy a second hand boat in Europe and bring back to the UK are there any taxes or charges which need to paid upon arrival in the UK ?

What paperwork do you need ?
And how do you check legal title, and if there is outstanding finance on the boat.

What kind of figures you talking, assuming small sports boat and private sale.
Draw up a bill of sale/contract, or get him to do it. Declaring you as the purchaser and him as the seller, stating the boat is sold for X free from any encumbrances.

Signed and dated by both parties.

Thats providing there are no original invoices or paperwork with the boat.

A second hand boat is considered new if:

A vessel or aircraft is not new
when more than three months have elapsed since the date of its first entry into service (see paragraph 2.3), and
it has, since its first entry into service, travelled under its own power for more than
100 hours if it is a boat, or
40 hours if it is an aircraft.
