Crate Engine

Evening all,

I've read in a few posts on here about people buying "crate engines", could somebody please explain these crate engines to me, and how they go about getting one?

It's to go in an Extreme 24 that currently has a Mercruiser 454 Magnum with Bravo 1 drive. If anybody could make a (reasonably) sensible suggestion on a motor I could get as a replacement I'd be very greatful.

Many thanks,

Andy

Paul, I'll have a word with Dave then!

Dutch, the 454 has just been re-built!

Kip, I do like the look of that, do you know if it'd be a straight swap for my 454?

If anybody has any links to places in the States that they've brought from I'd be interested to hear. I read a thread a while back about a guy getting a Volvo V8 for a black Extreme 24...

Cheers

Andy

I think that came from michiganmotorz.com

What the reason for wanting a new motor? If it's to go quicker, then I'd start with the drive height. It's too low, and would really benefit from raising the motor, or an IMCO shorty drive, or both.

Like Tony said it's might rigging things to take a look at before more power.
But a crateengine is not a bad buy. But you might do some updates on things like camshaft, valves, springs etc before you add all the other marine items.
2006 I bought a ZZ572/620 from http://www.crateenginedepot.com/cate...Category_ID=2& and had in my 28 Pantera. Then We went more bad when I hade the same engine in my 28 Arrow, we added a blower and thing like that. Now I going with the same engine in my 32 Activator.....but added a bigger blower...

//Mange

Yes, it's actually the same engine...

My father-in-law bought an LS7 for a Cobra build. Stunning engine for the money.

All sorted...

Thanks for everyones input on this subject.

I decided to go for the Mercruiser Remanufacturing 383 Mag Stroker.

With help from Coronet Kip, Paul E and Tony Davis (via the power of the internet) it's all in and running again - took the first proper trip at lunchtime and it's running wonderfully.

Took this picture off the back of Herm - doesn't really show alot but it's the only one I took!
