D-60 Powertrucks B28

Hi all,

So I've now got the B28 previously run as D-60 POWERTRUCKS. Would anyone have some info on it's previous life etc?
Obviously I know it's the boat Toby, Roy & Moose did RB08 with, but I'm looking to find anything I can about when & where it was built, what it's been through the years etc. I read on OSO that Swedish built ones all have a paper hull ID and the US built Armarda ones have an ID plate on the transom. Mine has an ID plate but I believe it's a Swedish one?
Anyhoo, any information, pics etc would be greatly appreciated, along with any other B28 related stuff anyone may have! I want to find out everything I can about them!

Cheers, James

I remember racing with Derek Basham in Jersey in an Offshore 2000 race in a Phantom 18/XR2 and Mick Archer was racing it then who I think may have been the first owner? That's when it was called Powertrucks - Mick was part of the Birmingham Navy, of course so was Ian Stirling!

That was his B23 cookee, a special build if I remember correctly with a much flatter aft section. James, it's an American built boat, I think I have some of the lay up info from Ocke somewhere, will try and dig it out.

You're right - I think it must of been when we were racing the RIB in class III that we were in the same races as Mick?

Brilliant, thanks Toby. Wasn't trying to avoid you, just didn't want to pester you either!
Any info you may have would be fantastic, it seems very well built and is definately very substantial in there! I'd expect the opposite from the yanks!

Cheers, James

Congrats, very nice boat.

I do have a test report of the Armada but it will take a while to find it.

I think the boat in the magazine article may have been parked up on a trailer in Dubai Marina a few years back under a layer of sand!

That would be Ian Blackers boat and I reckon that is now racing with a V8 in it and a full canopy with Matt Sydenham?

I think I have got some video coverage of Mick Archer in D-60 from Gibraltar 2001. However, it's very poor quality as it has been recorded from the television. You are welcome to have the video should you wish as I do not have any way of transferring it to DVD.
I will check out the video tonight to make sure that it has got the footage on it. From memory it is the basic race from the third day of the racing there in 2001.

That'd be brilliant, thanks very much! I know a local guy who can do the transfer then I'd be happy to send it back if you like!

Thanks, James

Roy and I went up to Mick's place in October '07 to look at it with the intention of cutting a deal and the towing it straight back. I looked over the boat/engines whilst Roy the poor Jersey farmer did the haggling! We nearly drove off without it but a deal was struck, Roy opened his wallet, and once the dust and dead moths had settled a couple of old english fivers passed hands.
Once back in Jersey Toby gutted it and then the designing, prepping and rebuilding work began. As Mick had it she only carried about 350 lites of fuel which was never going to be enough for the longer RB08 legs(or the shorter ones for that matter!). Ocke was very helpful with regard to where we could put the tanks, as we could only get 550 litres in the boot. Two further 120 litre tanks went either side of the driver/nav seats - it was like driving an incendiary bomb when the tanks were full.
One of the first shake down runs we did was a charity race against a plane from the bar in St.Helier Yacht Club to the bar in The Ship And Crown in Guernsey. Once there, we noticed that the deck fillers for the side tanks had started to pull out of the deck and were sitting a good two inches proud of the deck.
Long story short and only about a week before leaving for the start of RB08 us good old Jersey boys (strong in the arm/thick in the head) finally spotted that there were NO deck supports at all in the bow section. This allowed the deck to 'pivot' on the deck support under the dash, hence the deck fillers pulling out.
Some very hasty mods were made with foam core deck supports and bulkhead fitted. Once again Ocke was great with his guidance here, and was chasing us for info as to how we were getting on! AND that is why she is 'very substantial' as you put it James.
Lots of other stuff got beefed up as well, including the stainless wing supports that Roy used on his B23s to stop them cracking. Lots of extra weight unfortunately but strength was more important, although we still managed to break a good few parts, including the bulkhead infront of the drivers position. (There is a 'mouse hole' shaped access into the bow section, which had to be 'filled' to pass scrutineering. Once again us Jersey boys got it a bit wrong and used an ali plate bolted through the foam/glass bulkhead. On the first leg from Portsmouth to Plymouth the rigid ali and flexible bulkhead had a bit of a falling out, causing the deck supports further forward to break also. Again some hasty repairs were carried out, and to prevent it happening again we left the ali plate off - but don't tell Mike Lloyd as it never got spotted at subsequent scrutineering! And that is another reason she's beefy in those areas).

Have fun with her!

All the best

Moose

That's brilliant, thanks Moose! I love bits of info like that, gives a feel for why the boat is the way it is!
I had figured the bulkhead and joiners were an addittion for RB08, I did wonder how you got away with the 'mousehole' in the front!

That rear fuel tank is a monster! It's like having a domestic oil tank in the back! What happened to the side tanks? Were they ally ones or just plastic temporary efforts?
I'm going to have to move the tank for the V8 to go in so was planning to chat with Ocke about where I sould put it. Knowing they apparently run bow heavy I'm guessing as far back as possible! I may make it into a belly tank so I can move it about to find the sweet spot if Ocke can tell me where the longitudinal COG should be.

I've never seen a boat with stringers like that running down the deck, and the hull longits are far thicker than any other B28 I've seen! with the extra support you guys added I'm happy she should take some serious abuse. If not, I'll continue with the development till she does!

Cheers, James

Olli - Thanks very much for the article, I'll have a good read when I get a chance! If you do happen across the Armarda article that'd be fantastic!

Thanks, James

Oh she taken some serious abuse in her time that's for sure. A fantastically safe and sure footed boat to drive especially in rough water - foot down and do the rest on trim/jack plate and bow tank. Although as you said James they are nose heavy, which is why in the B28 the bow tank is just in front of the drivers feet. Being a stepped hull they need to run level, but I believe Mick moved the tank from right up in the bow as the B23's have, to where it is now as he got fed up of stuffing! (Tank was too far forward and controlling the ballast was too difficult).
Domestic oil tank? I'd rather pay to fill it with heating oil than to foot the bill for brimming with petrol! Not forgetting the other two tanks!!!! Those we still have somewhere - probably at Roys' place - Toby took them out so he will know the answer to that one.
Am looking forward to you posting pictures of this build. Got a few pics of when we got her and of some stages of work we did if your interested.

Moose.

Yeah that'd be fantastic if you could! We had a good old look over her yesterday when we eventually got her upright, I can't wait to get started!!
Still trying to decide what colour to eventually paint it at the moment. Any old pics you've got would be great, I've got a big library of past pics of all the boats I've owned.

On the bright side, it'd seem that if I take her off the trailer (as I want to make a few changes there anyway), it'll fit into the workshop. Result!

Do you know what year it was built, what the hull weight is and what the layup is? I'd be interested to know if it's a core hull or solid without drilling a hole in the bottom!

Turns out it's even wider than I thought, 10' 3"! Still 9' when tilted. Should make towing on an island with a 7' 6" limit fun!

Cheers, James

Yep you might even need a CE licence to tow it ! or you could do a deal at boatworks and save a few quid on escorts.

Could do with an answer to my PM if you know anything

Steve
