Wow, looking realy good. Can't wait to see how this turns out. Are you going to run sea water through those carge coolers because I thought about this for mine as I am using the same aluminium charge cooler and came to the conclution that as they are very thin walled that they would not last long and one thing you dont want with diesels is swallowing water as even a tiny bit will bend and break a rod. Keep up the good work.

Well a tiny bit water would be cool because they actually use water injection to keep pistons cooler, the fins in their drift car use up to 50L / hour !!!!

Wel yes the coolers are very thin but I am only using on fresh water here and you always could make a water / water cooler for that cooler.

Thanks I really want to see it run now

Sorry if you already answered this question but what vehicle did this engine come out of?

I dont think we ever got this variant in Australia.

We had the 270 cdi in a range of vehicles then it jumped straight to the euro 4 version of the 642 engine.

starting a V6 Merc CDI 3.0 build myself.

Hi Luke and welocme to boatmad forum.

The engine he is using was used in the E320CDI and S Class Mercedes, if you search youtube under Black Smoke Racing you see one which is now putting out around 550bhp

I suspect with larger bearings and later design the OM642 may be an even stronger engine.

As for flywheel coupling I used a Mercruiser 7.2MPI and also the raw water pump. The coupling I turned town in diameter and re drilled it to fit the Mercedes flywheel. If you PM Jon on here he tod me that the Steyr enigines have a smaller diameter coupling that may not need turing down.

When you say Steyr, do you mean the engines destined for the Magna-Steyr G Class plant?

Hmmm thats strange, we never got the inline 6 version, went straight from 5 cylinder 270 to the Euro 4 280 and 320 (now 300 & 350cdi euro 5)

Steyr are an Austrian company, it was origanly Steyr-Daimler-Puch

www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steyr-Daimler-Puch

Steyr make marine and automotive engines, very interesting design I think the head and block are one casting for strength and lightness.

Dave,

What are you using for the throttle mechanism?

Did you convert the factory throttle body to a mechanical unit and run a cable to the binnacle or are you using fly by wire T/Body connected to a digital throttle system?

Sorry my bad.......

I will revise the question, do you use the standard Mercedes TPS system, usually mounted with the accelerator pedal assembly?
And if so, how is it used? I would like to use a Mercury binnacle with DTS if this is possible.

@ Dave, do you know if the ECU you purchased will allow for the adoption of a DTS binnacle type system?

Hi we are using our own ECU, develloped here in Belgium.

So, I realise it was very quiet around this project because of different reasons...

First of all busy with other things like :

and

Back in the days when I designed the boat, we were not thinking about inboard, only twin and single outboards.
So I decided to build a new dek, move the windcreen forward and narrow it so we would have more room inside and better weight balance for inboard

All JMHO

Good luck.
Not an expert specifically in boat cooling systems, but it follows that you'd need to balance any increased pressure created through flow restriction at the outlet by using a pump that can produce/maintain the required flow rate .... and then you get the best of both worlds.
