Destriero
Taken from the IBI newsletter - interesting!
________________________
Two historically famous and previously laid-up superyachts have been quickly and quietly removed from the UK port of Plymouth, where they had been stored for many years.
Early in the morning of Monday, February 9, two yachts — both reportedly the property of the Aga Khan — were separately towed down river by dockyard tugs from their berth inside the Royal Dockyard and placed on board a semi-submersible ship that was anchored just inside the Plymouth Sound breakwater off Cawsand Bay.
The yachts — the 67m (220ft) Destriero and the 28m (92ft) Kalamoun — were loaded onto the 159m (522ft) Dockwise barge carrier Explorer, whose destination is stated as Bremen.
Destriero (pictured) had a top speed of 62kt and was powered solely by three gas turbine General Electric LM 1600 units that jointly developed 54,000bhp and powered the yacht using three water jet drives. She was constructed at the Fincantieri yard in Italy in 1992 with a view to winning the Blue Riband Hales Trophy, then held by Hoverspeed Great Britain. She was chartered by the Costa Esmeralda Yacht Club, whose patron is the Aga Khan, with the intension of capturing the trophy and while she succeeded in breaking the trans-Atlantic crossing record in 1992, the Hales Trophy was denied because she was classed by her classification society as a private yacht and not a commercial passenger ship.
Sparkman & Stephens lays claim to having designed the other motoryacht, Kalamoun, which was built by Abeking & Rasmussen for an influential client. Others claim it was Pininfarina who was responsible for the exterior styling and aerodynamics. Thirteen years after she was originally built, she was redesigned and rebuilt again by Lurssen. The yacht is reported to have been installed with two MTU turbo-charged diesels designed for navy vessels, each of 3,000 hp and driving two KaMeWa model 71 water jets.

Aga`s Craft
So they have finally gone then.Kalamoun was rather like the german F.P.B`s
It used to flop on one side when running,so Shead Design was asked to advise on some skeg/rudders which King of Spain`s `Fortuna ` had, which were based on the skegs used for the Vosper VT1 hovercraft. They had them with shafting and props incorporated for a more silent running.Trouble was the grand plan to use them on the Southsea to Ryde route carrying cars, was aborted for fear of too much rubbish in the Solent ripping the skegs off.
The snag with the waterjets on Kalamoun was that it made the boat slide about until the skeg/rudders were fitted.

Now you aint gonna like this, but I've found that the Shead designs I've driven have suffered dreadfully with that, specifically the Portofino 31, and XPS34 ScumSqueekers.
If you're in a slight beam wind, they fall over in the usual way (into the wind), but when you try to correct it with a bit of tab, it ends up falling over the other way, and when you pull the tab back up a bit, it falls back the way it was to start with. Seems you can't get it to a point where it will sit upright, level on it's keel.
I always put it down to the huge amount of what I can only describe as 'Rocker' they seem to have in the chine, fairly unique to the Shead hulls, reckon it sticks to the passing wasser, and gets sucked down, you force it to unstick with a tab, and it flops over and sticks to the other chine..
tin hat firmly on....

Don't think you need a tin hat for that Jon, You're spot on to a point.
Both of mine will exhibit that characteristic once planing until you hit a certain speed, which to be honest isn't always possible with the XPS depending on weight carried. You need to pass 35 knots to get them running high enough and the effect just disappears.
It's most annoying on the XPS as the missus tends to move around the boat as I'm playing tabs but I have solved this with a nifty navigator chair arrangement similar to the dog's choke chain
The Revenger once she is through this awkard speed will stay put and fly truer than any other boat I have handled and that includes my Phantoms.

Sunseeker nasties
Time to drag that designer chappie over the bed of nails eh!
We never got that feedback in the office. Those sort of problems seem to be endless with motor boat design.Fix one problem and create another.I`ve seen Italian diatribes saying how they have improved the handling of the CUV hulls, and so on and so forth.Have yet to hear of the perfect hull in all sea states, bar a phantom of course! Moving weights about, hacking the hull wherever, all seem to be a grey art.You would think if these problems were so severe, word would get out and you would never sell any.Even Vospers had the same trouble with their boats, bubbles bursting under trim flaps throwing the boat about. In the case of the Aga Khan`s boat, the problem was recognisable as `Fortuna` had it a bit and that`s how we knew what to do to fix it.Originally you had to drive through the flopping state which must have been a bit worrying. Those skegs were standing upright in the boatyard waiting to be fitted in Spain, and as Don walked past a guy knocked one over which nearly cut Don`s thigh in half, quite nasty.

Yeah, the weight of a OB powerhead 'up high' is a pain eh! much better with 1/2 ton of pig iron deep in the bilge.

Dunno, but my first guess would be to increase it's possible sale value.

No magic performed here I'm afraid, all simple stuff, which is fortunate, coz I'm a simple fella.

Colt Sapporo etc
Colt Sapporo pic attached.
With reference to the skegs used on the motor yachts as based on the VT1 hovercraft, the scale model of this (VT1 M) was piloted by the engineering draughtsman for the raceboat Flying Fish.He could do this as he had a pilots license, and on one occasion we flew over the 1966 dock strike in Southampton. The engines for the VT1 (Lycoming gas turbines) were then used in N2 (a Shead Design,Picchotti built, yacht for John Tussaud of Propulser 1 fame). This boat then went to U.S. as `starship`.

Well yes and no.
I know I'd much rather be in the XPS than some American lake or Norwegian Fjord rubbish when the weather hits. And having done it with aforesaid versions upto 55ft in fleet we were the only boat willing to continue rather than run back.
Similar story with Revenger running with my mates Baja. All kids out of the Baja and in with me as parents don't trust them bobbing around the sea in an upturned bathtub
Proper deep vees have to be a compromise I guess.
