Don Aronow

Was looking for the Polly perkins stuff and turned up a 1987 Powerboat mag..... about half an hour later I hit the scanner to share a publishers statement on Don Aronow was a really nice read. Enjoy
Few other bits which I dig out & pop up at some point.

Blufin - hey thanks for digging that up! That old advert is sure a far cry from the review articles that have been done since by good mags like HotBoat, F&PB, Raceboat International, and Powerboat mag.

It's cool to see the old stuff, and remember all the 'water under the bridge' since the 'good ol' days'!

Just thinking about how abstract this all is. Pre internet, BBS was the rage at the time; PC’s were just breaking onto the scene. I recall as clear as day picking up the mag in Beaumont, Texas (not a million miles from JSRE) when I was flying forestry in East Texas for a short time, stories from that great fun. Read it cover to cover, for some reason I stuck it in the bag coming home rather than the bin. Find it 20 years later, post it here and what do ya know. Both are members of the same Forum.
So if I went to a bookie and got some odds and stuck a £10.00 on it I’d now be retired!!! or should that be retarded.

Thanks so much for sharing that article on Don.

He was such a great guy, many people only know of the racer or the man about town image.

During the early 70's when Cigarette was just taking off as a company, the fuel crisis hit the world and any interest in high performance boating died.

Don had a choice, he could slow down production and lay off a lot of workers, or he could keep making boats and hope the buyers would come back.

He told his general manager to keep making the boats and just line them up in the yard when they were done. He told the workers that their jobs were secure and they could go back to work and not worry. As we know now, the demand came back and the company took off as one of the greatest of all time.

Another worker who came from Cuba and was with Don when he had Donzi, worked all kinds of extra jobs and any overtime that was offered. Don found out he was a fisherman in Cuba and was trying to get enough money to buy a boat inthe US. Don bought him the boat and he went back to fishing.

There are many other stories like this that somehow never get told about Don. There is reason that he is remembered after so many years and it isn't just about the racing and boat building.
