Dubai Fall Out With Uim

For those interested in news outside their back garden. The news is that Dubai have suspended all UIM sanctioned events in the Emirate. WPPA's Saeed Hareb has stated in a roundabout way that he thinks the UIM operate in a very unprofessional and he does his WPPA no longer wants to be associated with the world's governing body. Maybe next Saturday's UIM World Class 1 event will be the last seen in Dubai until the power that be 'kiss and make up'

And this is what F1 supremo San Germano had to say at a lunch time press conference in Sharjah.

Following the announcement by Saeed Hareb, Chairman of the World Professional Powerboat Association (WPPA) that Dubai was suspending all UIM sanctioned events in Dubai, I would like to make my position clear as the promoter of the UIM World F1 Series.

I have known Saeed Hareb for more than 20 years and have the greatest respect for him. He has raised the profile in the UAE to the highest professional level and the sport of Powerboating has benefitted greatly from his hard work.

The UIM World F1 Series sees the UAE as one of the foundation stones of today’s powerboat racing and as such we have made Abu Dhabi our headquarters. I am fully aware of the close association of Abu Dhabi with Dubai and I sincerely hope the UAE powerboating associations can resolve their differences with the UIM to enable the sport to move forward in a professional manner.

New UIM President Raffaele Chiulli has, in a short space of time made an effort to repair the damage that was created between the UIM and WPPA by his predecessor but unfortunately because of certain controversial decisions by the UIM, another serious wound has been opened which has led to today’s situation to suspend UIM activity in Dubai.

It is imperative that this ‘lose lose’ crisis is resolved and I will do my best to assist in turning this situation into a ‘win win’ result and I’m sure once all the parties can agree on an amicable solution, the sport can move forward in a professional manner.

Will all this effect P1, is it not their intention to increase awareness in the UAE of their race series and host perhaps more than one race in the region, especially now the recession has deepened in the western world

What controversial decisions are they then?

Likewise I hope they can sort it all out and go forward together!

Lets be fair, the dream of P1 boats racing further afield than Europe was a "logistical" step too far for the competitors.

The politics that are going on out in Dubai are not exactly new although it gives my mates Chris and David something to write about in their magazines.

Thank goodness we can look towards '09 here in the UK, and know we will see some "big boat" racing!

Just hope the owner of P1 changes his dates for August Bank Holiday weekend - I know of one or two P1 racers that would prefer to do the CTC.
