Early Phantom 23 inboard.
i have recently bought a phantom 23, She has Lancing Marine LM14 sterngear. A call to Lancing resulted in photos being sent to Mike Bellamy, who forwarded onto Steve baker. Steve has confirmed only two of the early 23's were fitted with inboards,. Mike built one and Steve the other. Although her last engine was a Jaguar 4.2 6 cylinder, previously she had a z drive. the original hull colour is correct and although the stainless deck rails are missing, the filled holes are still evident. Steve Baker beleives her to be his first racing phantom 23 "Cordite" 088, from the early 1970's. Does anyone have any pictures or information. I now intend to restore her, but not back to the original Rover v8, but Jag 4.2 as i have everything required for the installation.

Cordite
That sounds like it will be a great project, remember seeing Roger Clarks Phantom 23 Super Soft in the late seventy's and really wanted one. Jag would be great but quite heavy engine, can't beat the sound of a straight six on full song. If you go for Rover V8 there are a lot of cheap tuning goodies available. These people are very good.

You can get quite a lot power out of the old Rover now and a very light engine,
bored and stroked 250hp reliably.
Good luck
David

The transmission, sterngear and engine/b'box mounts are all jag 6 cyl, so would be a much bigger job to put rover back sadly, but i think she only had the rover in for a short while as Steve baker tells me the crankshafts were not up to the marine application and i think they had to be pretty much standard units at that time. the jag may well have been from about 1974 onwards anyway. Standard jag about 265 bhp.

Cordite
Hi Guys
I know i am posing a little bit late! I have recently acquired Cordite earlier this year, there has been a lot of swapping and changing in the engine bay but still has the v8 lump, so im not sure if this will help at all! I was told that she was an avenger 21, not a phantom. I hope im not getting these things confused!
Id love to get more involved with these style of boats, I run mine as much as I can afford!

Hi, can you post some pics. Before my boat was finally recognised by Mike B, as being his, we thought it was Cordite, but had been repainted several times and various tell tale markings had been obscured etc etc. If you look on BM media, there is film of her racing. Get in touch if you like as I would be very keen to see her set up. regards Nick

The one in my driveway in that photo was one I picked up for Tim B-C here,
It had a modified foredeck and fitted with a rover V 8.
I never drove it so would not be fair for me to comment.
They do come up on E Bay usually cheap too.

HI Gazza
Yep thats the one i had bought, although had been stripped of her markings so I decided to call her Red Devil before I found her original name. The poor boat had pretty much been neglected - found a mouse nest under the floorboards! but have been giving her as much TLC as i could and hopefully will be back again soon!
this is her in a small lake, just having a bit of a play before going to sea at portsmouth.
I will take some better pics of her soon, but heres a shot when i had to rework the trailer as was a bloomin awful ride!
Will be down the dartmouth area this next week if anyone is around there! any info and ill be happy to help
Cheers
Will

Nothing turns like an Avenger ! Loving the style of that classic with thru transom exhaust. A great sea boat too superb in the rough not bad fo a 50 yearold design.
I have a tiger Shark 21 version and putting a small 5 litre in at the mo . Keep the blog going,
