how early 80's?
cus before 1983 ish power was measured at crank so a 200hp is only a 175

but a 200 2.4 and a 200xr2 will be same power but 2.4 will have more torque and rev less so that means less maintainance

except the 200 xr2's are 197 hp stock so you will have another 3 hp

I doubt all 200 XR2's are exactly 197hp and I doubt that all 2.4 200's are exactly 200hp so its pretty much as Burty said. If your 2.4 is old enough to not have oil injection and has a 16 amp stator and assuming its in good nick you will be able to rev it in the high 6's which nearly as much as an XR2 but it will have greater bottom end punch.

just FYI the old crankshaft rated 2.4 200 (which is 175hp in todays money as Burty said) is a vertical read motor so make sure you get a horizontal one.

I think the max hp on xr2 you can get is 230 on pump gas
you can get them finger ported, lightened balanced, high compression heads

i'd stick with a standard 2.4 less hastle and you will always ultimately get more power from the same mods
