First you need to find out if you've got low water pickups. Feel around the point of the bullet for these, you'll know if they're there.
Second you need a working pressure gauge, so you can check you're not too high and cooking your engine.
A good place to start would be with the bullet 2" below the bottom of the boat if you've got low water pickups, or with the cavitation plate 2" above the bottom if you haven't got low water pickups (bullet about 6" below).
From these base points, you want to try raising and lowering the height with a variety of different props each time, and testing holeshot, top end and handling each time till you find a setting and prop combination you're happy with. Just make sure you've always got good water pressure!
Going higher should increase top end speed until the point where you've got too much slip. Going lower will increase grip for a better holeshot. Somewhere in the middle should give a good all round, but it all depends on what you want to use the boat for. No use having a great top end but loads of cavitiation when you're getting on the plane if you want to tow toys!
Obviously there's far more to it than this, and there's plenty of other people out there who know way more than me on the subject. Just hoping to give you somewhere to start till others give they're suggestions.
Cheers, James

Hi Rob,
A 2.5 on a p18 should run mid 70,s upwards depending on which engine you have and if it is set up properly.
The other thing you need to take into consideration is offset of the motor to allow for twist in the boat due to torque of the motor.
Anyone who has raced for years knows just how quickly things can go wrong at speed so you would be best to speak to a reputable dealer in your area to find out the best/ safest set up for you.
The boat can always be tweaked for more speed once a good base setting is found.
I am in no way doubting your abilities as a driver but as one of my boats is a p20 that ran a 2.4efi I know how much of a handful they can be.

Bullet level with bottom of boat,Engine bolted dead centre . 26 Yam drag prop should give you 90mph if you're running a 2.5 efi 260 and you've got the balls.

If the motor is lower it will get you out of the hole quicker but results in more drag = less top end.
The higher you go = less drag and better top end but more unstable especially depending on what prop you are running.
Ideally you want a set up that gives you a good average speed or the other alternative would be to fit a jack plate.
Hope all goes well with your start to racing.

Old thinking was offset engine to starboard to counteract the torque produced by the prop.
Newer sensible thinking says mount it dead centre and offset the torque by placing ancillaries like batteries to starboard.
Boat will sit on it's side slightly at rest but be level and true at top end / optimum trim
'tis why we always have a steering wheel, and hence driver, mounted on the starboard side in single engined affairs not as you may think because we are british.
