Engines from the US

Has anyone had any experiences of buying s/h or new outboard engines from the US?

I know about the shipping, duty and VAT side of things but are there any reliable dealers over there that people on the forum have dealt with?

Obvoiusly price and choice of engine are the gratest lures for such an exersize

Captain Chaos has been rumoured to be trying to buy/import an engine for some months, something is on its way from the USA but at the moment he is not saying.

I buy engineering equipment and some boat bits. beware of the duty. quite often customs estimate the duty if they think your invoice value is low. i recently imported a yam 130 hood and the duty was more than the price paid when the shipping company tried to deliver.

Thunderbird - If you have proof of what you paid (other than the invoice), you can contest the duty they charge you if they've estimated it.

I import a lot of stuff from the far east, US etc. and have a very good shipping agent. They did tell me what the duty was on an o/b engine but I can't remember exactly what it was. I was suprised how little it was though.
