FAO Mike Ring, or anyone that knows their 21s...

We're in the process of refurbing and re-rigging an old 21, and I'm just after a bit more info on our hull, and some set-up advice

It was called 'Die Valkyrie' and was originally blue. The screen is a separate moulding, and it's got quite prominent flanges on the deck/hull joint.

I can't find any kind of serial numbers or identifying marks anywhere, it's quite likely that they've been glassed over though as the boat has had some work over the years. It's all in remarkably good shape though, no stuctural work is required at all, the main bulk of work has been sorting out chips dings and scrapes she's picked up over time. The running surface is pretty much flawless now, hopefully it's worth the work I've put in!

The transom measures around 26.5", and the boat had twins in it's early life (115s I think). We're going to run a carb'd 2.5 200 on a 20" offshore leg with a 2 hole CLE 'box, what kind of offset should we be be looking at? Any vague prop ideas to give us a baseline set up to work from?

She's looking a fair bit better off than in the pics now, and is ready for it's first dose of paint any day now

Cheers for any help

Paul

When it had a Yam 225 on the back a qss prop worked best.

Looks like it was originally rigged as a ski racer, with the bow tank and ski pole cut out.Had exactly the same boat,21,square windscreen,in white,exSCOTT FREE,Paul Scotts old boat from Ron Scott Marine.Ran it in early 90s with a 220 merc Lazer. 30mm offset to port and a hydraulic jack to give you 4inches up and down, saved all the feckin about and grunt.Bow tank we never used, there was always 40 stone sat in the middle

That tank was the fuel tank, not a ballast tank. We've cut it out though and will be running a tank in the back, between the transom support knees, long and low. What kind of speeds did you get with the 220? And what prop? Cheers for the help guys

Struggled to get 60,engine was shite, kept going back to outboard and hydroplane services under warranty, chopper was best, when motor was on song that is,weight is a big factor tho, props is horses for courses, scrounge what you can of larby and others, there must be every prop going some where down in G,spend the weekend trying them all out, rough and flat, till you are happy.

Hi Paul,

All the Rings I have set up seem to run best when the engine is not raised and running a Laser rather than a surface prop/cleaver.

Allow enough offset for torque steer .

When we fitted the H/O to Jacq's Ring it was running just over 70mph with the viper prop.
Sony back in the good old days with the 2.4EFI was high 70's with a standard Laser

Hope this is of help

Steve

Just seen this Paul...
The moulding forward was put in for a ballast tank.
This boat would have been built between 1978 and approx 1983. It looks like a twin rig skiracer.

I have no more info I am afraid. With a 200 merc of the period we would have used a chopper , 24 maybe a 26 and engine transom height of around 23.5"

good luck , Mike

Sony was owned by Andy/Dave Best.
I think the name was sponsor/business related-hi-fi

I have some great Herm race footage showing how it ran, I did beat Sony on this occasion but to be fair he did spin his prop bush two laps from the end.
I will try to get a copy for you

Steve
