follett

JF have a look at the engines that old man has put on and you will see it has 3 turbo's and it is 630 hp i am told

OK, whatever.

But I'm reasonably familiar with the 630's from Debenhams, which definitely only had two stage turbocharging/intercooling.
And I can only see two turbos on that motor in the picture, mebbe the 3rd is obscured.

The last Sabre engined boat I raced was the USA Racing cat that I navigated, admittidly not very far, in the 1984 Round Britain. We then raced it at Cowes and got 2nd overall with Tim Powell and Willie Meyers. The motors then were two stage turbo, intercooled and aftercooled. The compression was so low that you had to start them on the "start pilot" eather system. The smoke on a cold day was incredible ! At that stage they were about 550HP, as JF says they were more for Debenhams. Gary Knowldon would be the guy to speak to. Doesn't he work out of somewhere in Cobb's Quay now ? As far as I know the later versions of the motor did have special blocks, I would have thought that a late motor running say 550HP should be very reliable and would give you about 70MPH which is fast enough to have lots of fun!

The ether 'start pilot' system was a last resort method on 'Debenhams', with the norm being 2-3 hours of pre-heat with the 1KW webasto engine heaters, (1 on each of the 3 engines) run by the generator on the trailer. That brought the engine temp up to just about high enough to start without the 'clank-rattle-wheez' of the start pilot.

Still bellowed white/blue smoke on start up mind. which then became thick black smoke when getting up on boost with the torque converters slipping away, ...lock em out and -----one hell of a whistle/whine

All this talk of Follett and Debenhams reminds me of the 80s especially the 1990 global uk challenge, when I was an ex sometimes racer, and 20 something offshore groupie...how sad is that!!! but I really did look foreward to watching some exciting close racing in the global 5 race series unfortunatly it mostly never came in the first race some donky had straped the engine drives to the bathing platform of debenhams, john clarks cat engines did more exploding than your average fire work night, and there was no sign of the original follett beast unearthed here to stike fear in the average racer, those were the days guess they will be back somewhere around 2170


PS...It's always sad to hear of an ex racer going to a new playing field, think his Cougar had one of the coolest colour schemes ever when I first saw it at Portsmouth late 80s...RIP

Twoz before my time with the boat you nobbers!

In fact, when I got involved, via Howard Wretham, it was to sort out a few things, the crap Arnerson outrigger being one of em.

It was originaly trimable, with a very flimsey scissor jack arangement that trimmed all 3 drives at the same time, it's design was fataly flawed.

Twoz my idea to do away with the trimmable bit, and produce new anchor assys for each Arneson torque tube, I made the wooden 'plug' for sand casting these, and they were cast in Nickle-Bronze by Robert Cooks' company, and finish-machined by a mate of mine's engineering firm in woking.

The guess at drive height needed to be pretty good, as we were going to be fixing it pretty permanently. The outers turned out perfic, but the centre needed raising a tad (1" at the prop) as that motor laboured compared to the others (couple 'a' hundred revs), causing the boost to rise, which translated to increased torque, which in turn translated to chucking all the ATF out'a the torque converter due to overheat.

Happy days.

here's the carnage your talking about with the original Don Shead/Comer marine affair.

Follett motors

There's been some debate over the number of turbos fitted to the Sabre Marathon engines of 'Follett'

Tony Fiddy has now sent me a close up pic.

I've added a few coloured boxes to identify things:

Red box = turbo 1

green box within red box = turbo 1 compressor

purple box within red box = turbo 1 turbine


Yellow box = turbo 2

black box within yellow box = turbo 2 compressor

light blue box within yellow box = turbo 2 turbine

dark blue box = exhaust link tween turbos.

the rest speaks for itself really.

I suspect the exhaust link between the turbines (in dark blue box) was mistaken for a turbo, because of the red silicone water hose sticking out of it, which looks a bit like a compressor outlet hose.
