Formula on ebay

Hi
Anyone know this boat? I don't get a warm and cuddly feeling about its provenance...

scamming t***-pot (no offence)

Ah, what eagle-eyed gents you are.
The "vendor" subsequently sent me the same pictures from the original - except the quality had dropped because they were copied. I didn't realise there were so many redneck pickups and suv's in Hitchin!
I have informed the authorities...

Thanks for your help.

If there were I'd have spotted them - I live in Hitchin!

Everyone knows that if you want Rednecks and SUV's you have to drive 10 miles West on the A505. To Luton.

Its an auction, what you bid is what you buy, not pay to look. Totally agree with previous treads that it is probably a scam, the poor buyer now has a mess to sort.

If you watch ebay long enough you start to get a feeling for the scams. In this case for example the seller has no feedback, has only been an ebayer for a week, there's only one picture, the description looks like its been cut & pasted from a boat test, the description says its the personal craft of the owner of an RV business (and not in Luton I'll wager!). Usually the auctions have a short run time and no reserve. These things on their own don't necessarily point to a scam but put them together and things get smelly. Also as Matt was able to demonstrate if you look further afield you have more chance of catching them out. A true owner would have to be mental to even accept the possibility of nine grand for a boat like that. Unless the part of the boat you can't see is actually missing.

Are you saying that because you win the auction then you have to pay no matter what:

Well not entirely. As far as I know its a legally binding contract to buy - providing the item is legitimate. If its non-existent or very much not as described then you can refuse to pay. I don't know if the contract thing has been tested in court. A serious ebayer wouldn't risk destroying a good reputation either as a buyer or seller by mucking about. In the case of the scammer they most likely will ask for a deposit by e.g. western union to "hold" the item while you arrange to collect or survey (goodbye dosh). They might contact you outside of ebay and ask for bank details (goodbye all your dosh).

No, Ebay can't force you to pay. I guess if you backed out then the seller could try taking legal action against you, but I think all he'd possibly get would be his costs recovered. But that assumes he's legit. He's gonna look pretty f***ing stupid complaining to Ebay that a buyer didn't complete on the sale of a boat that didn't exist in the first place!!

Anyone who pays for an item like that without having checked both it and the seller out well in advance of bidding deserves to be stung, frankly. The scammer only has to be lucky once to make it worth his while.

I sold a motorbike on Ebay once, no problem at all, the guy came along, paid the cash and took the bike away. A week later I get a call from the cops saying that I've sent someone a 'second chance offer', they've paid two grand by Western Union and that the 'buyer' never received the bike, so where have I hidden the money?
They also called on the bike's new owner and turned up threatening to impound it as they believed it wasn't legally his.
Once both of us had showed the woodentops all the paperwork they went away satisfied, but I still have trouble believing that there are people out there who will fall for stuff like this. 'Fake second chance offers' eh? The oldest scam on the Ebay block.

I had a little play with the guy and he offered a buy it now of 10K, so I agreed and lo and behold the boat is actually with him in Valencia where he recentlt relocated his business. First off he said he would ship it no problem and two mails later it turns out he needs some money in the next 24 hours.

I said no problem I was loaded with cash and could be there In 36 to collect, just send me the documents to confirm european registry etc and I'll be on my way............................................... .................................................. .......................then the mails went dead

Shame really as I would have loved to wound this guy up or if by some ridiculous manner the boat had magically got from the states to there in 4 weeks I would have a cheap boat.

I tried to warn the buyer off on EBAY but they don't let you contact another unless you're asking a question about something he's advertising, which he's not. hope he doesn't get ripped off.

Anyway how's the sister ship going, mines in bits at the moment having a real tidy up so I hope to have the cleanest version out there this year.

There are some fantastic ones in there! The photo gallery is brilliant. All these scammers trying to prove their identities by complying with the 'victim's' request for photos and captions.

My favourite is a distinguished looking Nigerian bloke in a suit holding up a sign saying 'I FELCH WOMBATS FOR CHARLIE MANSON'

Having seen some of the pics on there with "I love fags" etc. reminded me of this weeks top gear - they were in America in redneck area (south somewhere) and wrote stuff like we love fags etc., they turned up at a 'gas' station and the owner "called the boys", next thing a load of rednecks turned up and started pelting the cars with rocks, it was funny until James Mays car decided not to start!
