Crazy day really. I was working in the City.

I heard that Branson and the Virgin Challenger were going to do their stuff on the Thames.

I was trading LME Futures in those days, and rather than ask my boss for a "pass" all afternoon, I invited him along.

Branson put a "huge" spread on in a large boat moored next to Virgin Challenger.

Was good fun!

Dunno about that, but if my boat got into a race by the skin of it's teeth, I don't think I'd raise the very same rule area when knocking someone who, as it happens, not only won overall, but did it completely within the rules.

The Gentry looks like a Levi, and Destriero looks like an ex fast naval/military style hull.

Serious Post.

Jon, I understand that you are going to see FB in the next couple of weeks.

Our rules, hull lengths, engine sizes etc. will need to be clarified.

The UK sport has missed Tony Needell - it needs someone like you with your knowledge.

Why put 55' foot on it then. I suppose the owner boasts he has a 10" co%*

Still had 3 engines or was one a reserve

Yea but we made the boat longer to go up a class. Most boats want to go down unless they want to over power a small boat and as it proved we never were as the boat handled the rough water much better than the larger ribs. Ask James he saw us past him in the Goldfish.

The boat measures over 33' foot without the beak extension ( it was to spear the opposition ) the rear mods on the transom made up the length and that was made to the rules ie it extends to the hull. remember the boat had a 6% transom angle no good for our drives.

Bt the way you ain't got any short legs we could borrow

hardly unusual, have you looked at the Fountain range of boats, I reckon their 27 footer is about a 23 if you lose the beak & the bathing platform.

This is true, and just as yours had two, for it's class it was perfectly legal.

In fact, it could have had four if he so desired.

No, I've not measured it, but am aware that it struggled to meet minimum length.

- Not sure about that, but Virgin Atlantic Challenger II was unmistakeably a Levi design and featured his own 'Levi Drive Unit' which gave 50 knots from twin 2000 HP MTU's - not too shabby considering they were pushing 72ft and 37 tons!

Gentry was a Vosper Thornycroft built boat designed by Peter Birkett and powered with 2 MTU engines pushing 3480 hp each through Kamai Jets and a third 4500hp Lycoming gas turbine coupled to a Arneson surface drive with a 35" five blade cleaver (Raised when not in use)
Fuel capacity nearly 10000 gallons
112 fet and 88 tons

It would have been an impressive site if all three superboats could have played together !!!
