Google stumbler says Hello

Hi,

I stumbled across the internet search results to your site an ended up in Larby's Revenger thread, of all places. Quite a handfull, I was so glad to see the end of the infection by page 8

Short version - born in Brumajum (Kingstanding, Birmingham)'54, came to Canada on a boat '61, bought first Checkmate (17M/X165-I/OAlpha) 1974, and still have her - my avitar. Recently found the boat I wanted to buy 20 years ago - 1989 28' Checkmate Maxxum w 2xBravo drives, no engines, and have been sourcing the engines and parts and building a boat house for the last 18 months.

What a great site - I hope to share some stories and pics and trust you will forgive any protocol faux pas. After all, I have had a Yank influence to endure for the last 49 years

I found the two mercuiser 454s in Kansas for $2500 and had them shipped. Pretty rough, but the blocks alone worth the price tag. I then stripped them and had them bored 0.060 and ordered the Eagle 11111 rotating assemblies. Here they are last April, just back from the machine shop;

Motor mount bracket; Coil and Relay Bracket; Remote Oil Filter - and yes, the filter is auto-grade, just there as a placeholder.

Welcome to Boatmad.com. It's always good to have new overseas members.

Nice looking work on the motors. What's your predicted HP & top speed

Thanks, Jon. I went with the Crane 139021 roller setup with the 088 rectangle heads and 1050 dominators. Similar setups net just over 600hp and 575-600ftlbs, so I expect to see low 90's with 28-30" props.

Here is the cam card; and one block tilted to show off the brass plugs

Welcome to the Forum Nigel and keep the pictures coming.

You must have a short season in Ontario? Still i guess that will make boating cheaper overall.

Boating gets difficult in the cooler monthsas the water gets a little stiff , but there are hidden costs with storage and winterization if unheated. I suppose one could argue boats last longer as they aren't used as much...we use our '74 May-October..and have it in a heated garage since '90.

There are no breaks with insurance, either. Same price in or out of the water unless the engines are removed (drydock policy) probably same in your area.

Here's the original brochure from the '74, our view from the front window at the stiffness of the water , and the Edelbrock I scrounged from the 350 Camaro build my son and I have on the go.

About 4-5 years ago, the Canadian $ and the US $ got a lot closer than in years, which made access to the marine goods market cost effective. In 2006, my Alpha in the MX needed a refresh so I checked out the price at Hamilton Marine for a new drive (upper + lower) $7800 Can.
I paid just over $1300 for the new one in the pic (no warranty) from 50 km south of the Can-US border. Delivered. The centre pic is the MX with sons and a girlriend, and the right is front view in May.

So, I came across the Maxxum in late 2007 and couldn't say no, given she came with the two Bravo drives and in reasonable shape. Here's the brochure I remember looking at with my wife in '89 and just couldn't consider the buy-in of $48k for a single drive, let alone the twin.

Don't know how you can stand the weather in the frigid north. Not at all like the sub-tropical conditions we are enjoying in south eastern Virginia today.

I was surprised to find her on eBay about 3 hours away - I was so busy negotiating price, arranging survey, delivery, and dealing with Customs and the Department of Transport to get it into Canada, I didn't put much thought into winter storage. Hence the lazy-man's boathouse

Parked in front; Quick solution underway; A few hours later I thought I was pretty smart. ( I was dreaming )

And what brings you over here to post, Ben? Were you banned from North American sites as well?

My makeshift boathouse didn't make it with all the - humidity (per Ben) we get here...

Enter the boathouse project while collecting a pile of engine parts, from engine couplers to starters, ignition to senders.

I was in a period of indecision over what I wanted from the mills - decided at one point to have an economic option , (anyone knows that you;re lying to yourself), to justify the expensive toy. Renewed the Qjets and stock alum performance manifolds, and that's when I decided I was nuts.

The Gen V 454's stock heads for the 260 hp were the peanut heads - but more on these later - so I went hunting for something a little better, and found 4 Gen V rectangle (iron) heads in Texas. This is when the juices started to flow, and the search escalated....add the 2x1050 Dominators and Team G single plane intakes

I went with some Jacobs electronics gear for the ignition pack and Ferrea valves with Crane cams, lifters, and retainers.

Staging the first block; Risers - I need to cut the long ones to fit, and will probably need to wedge the risers or move the transom cutouts before I'm finished.
