Harnesses

Just finished an interesting book. One of the things recommended was wearing a full race harness as this holds you securely in your seat, preventing you from bracing against the throttle/wheel.

Obviously there's a risk of being knocked unconscious and kept in the boat but just wondered what peoples experience of harnesses are and opinions on them? Are they permitted for racing? Cheers guys john

Would like to know what book that is - harnesses are only permitted in canopy boats - you wouldn't want to be strapped to an open boat at any speed whilst it rolling over! They are always used in conjunction with an air supply scuba style so that you can exit the boat in your own time.

Unless a canopy boat definately a no no - I like the old addage that its best to leave the scene of the accident before it happens.....

Sadly, open top canopies have proven equally lethal - Buhaleeba, Cowes 95.

It's a book by a guy called Dag Pike. Talks about hull design, controls, engines and propulsion, how waves form and tactics for driving fast. I am a conplete novice to "true" powerboating although I've had a few ribs and did my level 2 over 10 years ago. I found it very interesting and found a lot out I'd never thought of but there were a few bits which don't tie in with what I thought was the norm hence the post.

I think he's a yank which may explain it!

dont let mr pike hear you calling him a yank! Met him on the RB and a jolly nice chap he is too as well as being, imho, a bit of a legend.

I know a lot of very nice Americans! You have to admit though they have some funny ideas sometimes on what constitutes safe and fast! Have you seen the bass boats on YouTube?!

Having done some more research on dag pike I'm a bit disappointed the book didn't have anything about him or his achievements. 75 and doing the round Britain?! Clearly a very British hero! Have just ordered his autobiography of amazon.
