Hello! new to the board with a Phantom

hello together
my name is michael and i am new to the superb board here.
I am build in 61 and live here in germany at the river rhein with my family and a two year old shorty racer (son).i am mainly into dragracing with a supercharged stang.

Jon Fuller was so nice to set me up an account on your board after couple of emails .

i am on the water since the eighties, first with a glastron carlson CV 21 (the bond boat) barclay jet and later a 24 foot jaws offshoreboat (like a 24 cigarette) with 365 mercruiser. but after two years of pwc riding its time to get back on the water with my new toy the older waterski race boat phantom 600 "streets ahead"what i bought in your country to give here a new nice home.

i will restore it to original specs with all the grafics and colors, first i have to wet sand the hull with 1000/2000 paper and buff it with the 3 stage 3M marine gelcoat rubbing compound. lots of elbow grease is coming up.
i tried it on couple of spots and its coming up real nice with a bright yellow glossy gelcoat.

the boat had first a different name on it (cant read anymore) ,but had the same color graphics and number 70 on the sides, now its streets ahead and number 07

what was the original name ? and is it a real 600 with the little different hull , what steve baker did change after couple of race/driving problems.
i dont know exactly what is the hull difference from a 600 and p20 , i think the first center stringers are different,on some pics it looked to me that the newer ones have a half cut first stringer ,or the center riding platform is different.

i am looking now for some info and history of here, who where the owners and racers and for older waterski race pics.
if somebody will have something for me it would be real great and nice
to bring this baby back to live as it was in the eighties.

michael

The second picture shows your boat racing in a National Ski Race at Weymouth in Dorset. Driver Steve Pattemore. Boat was called "Take No Notice" I think. I believe the skier would have been Chris Wreford.

I'm observing in the Red/Grey Phantom for Richard Connock with Richard Walker driving.

Michael,

That race would have been late 80's 1988 perhaps ?

Welcome mate, after Steve Pattemore owned the boat a mate of mine bought it from Exmouth Power Boat Club in Devon and got sponsorship from Fulfords estate agents and their 'hook' line was 'streets ahead'.

We raced it in Ski racing on and off for years.

i am verry happy that you all help me that i know more about the history of my new baby,
i thougt fulfords was a sponsoring car dealership in the uk .
now i do have also a nice graffix lay out to make new stickers for the sides from the fullford estate page.

i found also some sticker left over shadows in the gelcoat observer G.Prengley.

ok now !!
i got some stuff together ,we have the driver/owner Steve Pattemore under
"Take No Notice",skier Chris Wreford and observer Grant Prangley and later under new sponsorship we got a new name "Streets Ahead".
and it looks to me like a P20 and not a 600 ,because i cant find a difference on the hull design at the transom, stringers and riding plate to anny other p20.

Brad....... who was the last owner/driver under "Streets Ahead" , G.Prengley ?

if somebody knows a place for older waterski race pics in the net ,maybee i will find some more pics of "Take No Notice" or "Streets Ahead" racing, let me know.
muchas gratias
michael

That is a P20, not a 600. It has the 'phantom pad' that was developed on the 600 to create the P20.

Phantom 600

All the best with your new boat.
Despite what John says, I am sure that it is a Phantom 600, the same as my old Willpower boat (sold to Cyco some time ago) it was always marked up as a 600 and would be about the right age. I don't know what the differences are but you may be able to tell from the shot where it is being crained ito the water.
When I was a Junior age 15 I raced a couple of times beyhind Steve if Chris Wreford was not available. I always used my regular observer of the time - Chris Chick
I have tracked down some 20+ year old footage of us racing in 1988 in a European cup enent in France, the race was on the river in Rouen. Although a junior, I raced F3 - we were no match for the lightweight "piranah" boats on this occaision, but did thrash them is the other more choppy races.

your P20 that Cyco had was defo a 20 and not a 600!! 600's were only built around 1986. Yours was built in approx 1991

Hi Burty,

We had the Willpower boat put together in late 1988 and raced it in F3 from 1989 It was definately a P600
I think that the hull may have even been built in 1987.
Still not sure what the diferences are though.
Cheers Marcus

Hey Marcus..... you are the man

today it is like Christmas eve for me to see the boat in action in 1988,
thanks very much for that.

it is nice to get the puzzle together and i am very proud that this boat has a lot off racing history and it is now in my hands.
it makes it not just to an ordinary boat it has now a soul.
thank's for that again.

on the video footage it had an mechanical transom lift on the merc, was it running well with that setup , if you do remember ?. i know its 20 years back.

the boat has the date code 860915 in 86 i think he was building the p600

michael

if somebody knows a trick to download this vid to my hard drive that would be great

If you don't know the difference between a 600 & a 20, what makes you think it's a 600?

Michael, do you have a clearer photo showing the lower transom area? preferably a larger picture size (up to 1000 pixel wide) If you do, I'll forward it to Steve Baker and ask him what it is.

Dude, Willpower had a 3digit serial number i think it was a 'c' eg. 16c or something like that, they only started doing serial numbers like that in 1988
before then they had a 6digit serial number like Germansaleen has. Apache had a 6 digit number and was built in 1987

Michael, I've sent your pic to Steve, I'm sure he'll clear things up.

I still think it's deffo a 20, as it has the classic phantom pad, that he drew for us to add to the 32 last year. That pad was first developed to correct the handling problems of the P600, and boats with the pad were known as the P20. It was then incorporated in the P21, and later the P23 / Evo rib.
