Help with Phantom Purchase

Hi

I am looking to buy a Phantom 16 (2004). The boat has no engine so I am looking for some advice on this. The boat will be used for Water Skiing, general messing around and some speed runs. Most if not all of the use with be in the sea. I am also looking to launch this from the beach by hand. The boat itself is obviously very light, but I am looking for the best balance of performance and weight. Ideally I would like the boat to be capable of 60-65mph, but at the same time don't want it to be too twitchy. A great deal of will be spent running around at sub 50mph and obviously a much lower still for skiing and pulling toys. I've had a large number of boats over the years, but never really put the package together myself. I have looking at Yamaha and Mercury as I have had several engines from both. My last was a 2006Mercury 135 2 stroke which was fantastic. In terms of price I am unsure what these go for and when the more "modern engines" came out. I guess I really want something 2006 onwards with <200 hours.

So, any recommendations for engines or anyone got one for sale.
Plus which shaft length is required for the Phantom 16 and what is the best prop for the uses I have suggested.

If its a 2004 it would have been one built by phantom uk, I can help with some info on this if you need it.

Just picked it up on Saturday.
Never rigged, no floor, controls or anything in fact.

I have looked at the Phantom UK website but the company seem to have disappeared. From what I gather they bough the original moulds / design and remade boats until 2010. If you have the contact details then perhaps I could pick up some cheap gear from them.

I also need help with finding someone to spray her.
Ideally in the Northwest. Already done a 500 mile round trip collecting from Poole.

yes they sold the moulds a couple of years ago to the west country. my dad was one of the partners as i think i know which boat it is.

Presume you Dad sold everything!

The boat was originally supplied to someone in Jersey, but never got build.
Bright blue with a white strip on the bow.

Now looking for a complete re-spray and someone to sort the interior / floor.

It's literally a shell.

Any ideas, preferably in the Northwest or Midlands.

Not been on these forums before.

Looks like my re-spray idea isn't popular.
I'm not really trying to create an out and out race boat.

More of a general purpose, manageable "old school" speedboat with an emphasis on speed. Launching from the beach with a Landrover, so hence going for a 16' not 21'.

Must be my age, but I'm trying to recreate what we had when I was growing up in the 70's & 80's. Fletcher, Shakespeare, Phantom, Glastron.

Before all these bowriders and American lake boats came on the scene.
Even my last fletcher had bloody seats in the front!

I was under the impression that the 16's and 21's were also produced with a back bench seat, floor and some creature comforts like carpet.

Sorry to those who think this is criminal.
Just trying to create a proper speedboat.

it was built to race originally. driver510 on here has lots of phantom patterns for seats may be worth a shout for trim. he may even have a pair of original seats...... but he may have sold them

Hi Paul

Can you remember what the max engine weight or HP rating was.
Bob and others have suggested a two stoke Yam 90.

Obviously 4 stroke are much heavier.
I've had a Merc. 2 stoke 90 and 135 before, both good engines.

Also mixed reports on Evinrude ETEC 90.
Modern 2 stoke, very light.

Andrew I guess we will see each other, we use our phantom 20 in Abersoch, any good car body shop will do your re spray if that's what you want. Try addlington ind estate, I think they are still called harpers auto body for your re spray.

the boat was built for the 90 etec racing class so that would be fine.

I have driven those outfits and they were good fun.

Great stuff.

If I use a car body shop for the re-spray, do them use different paint, or the same cellulous that is used on cars?

On the engine front, ETEC or Yam 90.
Lots of conflicting views.

ETEC looks better, but obviously that should be a deciding factor!

the etec is a good choice. good fuel economy run first turn of the key.

that would be my choice personally.

Really? Would you choose a E-tec?

They are good engines, but a Merc optimax would work as well, even better I think

yes, but i did say personally. its all going to depend on budget. I have driven a p16 with a 90 etec so i can compare and i have also raced a p16 with 90 yam. im not saying the etec is faster or anything just a nice smooth motor fora pleasure craft.

well from what i can gather,,factory-Poole-Abersoch-Kingsbridge-Lee on Solent,,,,i drilled the first transom holes,,,it ended up as an old classic sunday cruiser :o)
