HONDA ECU changes??
Does anyone know about the ECUs for the Honda 225s?
Next year are they going to make sure that the rules stays in where all ECUs are bog standard????
When they were all changed for ones out of the box in Plymouth, there was a dramatic change of speed in the RayMarine boat, it went from 1st to about 5th or 6th!! As soon as it was changed!!
It seems to be the subject of a few conversations. It was noted and heavily spoken about....Inc an article in Sportsboat a bit back... that boat apparently is untouchable off the start-block....i'm curious coz I'm thinkin' 'bout racing but not if this one-design isn't quite 'one-design'
It's only fun to win on an equal playing field if it's supposed to be..and Honda is.....
Anyone got a rule book so it can be looked up and put on here?

And also (though different class) a hot topic in Italy.
IMVHO, I view ECU's like the jets in a carb - let em be completely free, and then don't have to waste time policing it. Everyone'll end up with the same spec ecu anyway.

Blimey! It's getting like car racing was a few years back. I think it was Ferrari who designed an ECU program with massively illegal fuelling and ignition parameters, but then cleverly designed a feature into it whereby once the car was (I think) put in neutral and then revved in a certain sequence, the default programming was restored. Clever boys!
There were some great tricks in the early days of F1. 'Water cooled brakes' for example, wher the car was weighed at the start with all fluids on board, started the race and dumped all the 'cooling water' out of the tanks away in the first couple of laps. Once it had won through being severely lighter than anything else out there it was topped up with all lost fluids (allowed by the regs at the time) and then weighed again. Hey presto! Legal weight loss!
My favourite was the guy who put his club racer in for scrutineering with the tyres full of water rather than air, passed the minimum weight test then changed back to the air ones for the race! (This was in NASCAR in the sixties, apparently.)
Where there's a will there's a way. Naughty!

Agree that it is a big problem - but still don't think it should lead to free use of ECU's.
One Designs (incl Honda)
It would be fairly easy for the organisers to issue control ECU units at each race anyway. There will always be little tweaks that are legal but I think you have to keep the power and hulls the same for a one design class at least.
3C
I think the problem is that if ECU's are allowed to go free you are probably talking of power increases in the region of 50 hp or more. This then blows away a lot of the idea of the class, which from saftey points of view has been based around a power to weight ratio in trying to limit speeds.
If powers go up I think you will see the class die as it will also become a money battle as not everyone will spend the money or have the access to modified ECU's. Boats will arguably be slightly bigger, need to be canopied etc.
However it is much more difficult to police in an open design class so the problem does need addressing!

Another thread that has gone downhill... started by 'big spoon'
Back onto Honda boats - had a meeting with a company recently who used to sponsor a Honda 225 boat. They had some onboard video footage from there boat whilst racing.
Easy to see why it is popular with TV companies - collisions and accidents guaranteed!

Getting back on thread,
It's sold to the masses as idential boats for all with the difference on driver & set up on the day. Changing of ECU's get away from that concept does it not?
Or as a thought open it up on ECU's & run them with IIIC
