err how fast could one expect a 6.5 metre hardboat to go with a 150 Optimax on it. Also what sea coditions would that be good for

I haven't got one and yep I realised that different boats have different speeds. I am just trying to compare a hardboat to my old Scorp

as I seeem to be missing the speed

That all rather depends on what hardboat you choose, and how well it's set up.

a light-ish P21 (6.5m) would probably run 60 ish.(mph)

would run in a fair sea, but very differenty to ya average rib, as they're generaly set-up/ballaced to 'plod' easily in a slop, whereas the phantom would need driving really hard to get it to run nice, but ulimately more quickly.

it's all about 'trade-offs'.

Be quite a hard ride too, compared to a scorp

Ian runs a laser 2 though.when racing ya would need a prop to use in all conditions a fast(er), flighty prop isnt gona win a race if you cant keep the boat/ engine in the water.

I agree with Jon thats very quick wacky , the xr2 has a higher rpm limiter then the 150 aswell .

Wacky are you running any setback? and what prop?

I would agree with wacky and have actually sat in the p20 with 150 hp opti with gps that said 67 mph so i have no problems i also know the 21 with the 150 hp opti and i belive its all down to prop as he changed it and gained 4mph!!!! not so long ago

I run a Tempest Plus prop on a Ring 21 / Optimax 200HP. This prop gives much better handling than a Laser 2, in terms of reduced tendency to chine walk, whilst giving reasonable amounts of bow and stern lift.

Does anyone else have any experience of the Tempest props?

The phantoms are quick, with 150hp thats for sure, when we raced a standard lay up Ring 21 with the 150 of its day it ran 58mph, 60 on a good day and it was always slightly slower than the phantoms although they may have been lighter, and the opti has a lot more torque spread over a larger range, so I guess they should break 60mph today,if set up correctly

Have you tried any over the hub exhaust props? I can't get my Ring 21 to perform with any thru the hub. Last year tried a slightly worked 24" small hub Trophy that is through and over and the results were terrible - no pull out, chine walked like a b*****d and poor top end. With a laser again very poor acceleration.

First used a standard Laser 2 23 - aceleration once on plane good, although lots of cavitation getting there, also broke free too easily in turns even when trimmed right in. Handling very twicthy (very prone to chine walking).

Also tried small ear chopper prop approx 25-26 inch pitch, after initial cavitation gripped really well, although under pitched and therefore not getting best top speed. Handling good, much less chine walking. Prop had been worked and so not sure of exect diameter etc, may be a standard 25/26 inch chopper would give a better top speed ?

Large ear chopper prop (Chopper 2) 26 inch picth unusable as far too much stern lift and boat steered by nose above 50 mph.

Best prop so far is the tempest which is blue printed by Propellor revolutions and down pitched from 25 to 24. I would like to try a standard 24 inch pitch to compare to the current one.

I used to have a four bladed Rolla ( 2 blades @ one diameter and 2 @ another and 2 blades @ one pitch and two @ another) which was the dogs...... but somebody lost that for me at the bottom of Loch Earn. I am looking forward to trying a new Lightning ET which I've got from the states. Other options include the Yam and possibly the Mazco.

The original owner of my Ring 21 hired the lake at the National Water-sports Centre, Holme Pierrepoint for a day. He also took Mark Wilson of Rolla props fame with his old coach cum workshop conversion. Starting with about twenty props on the lake they found the best two before Wilson worked on them and the best one on the day was the one that came with the boat. 26" overall pitch @ 7100/7200 rpm.

If you mean me, then I am sorry to contradict you but I certainly dont use a laser. Tried a 23 in testing and it was useless. We run either a trophy or tempest depending on which one falls out of the car boot first!
