Probably not enough money in it compared to hydraulics!

Hi Barry,
I am not sure there is much of a market for stripped out gas guzzling power boats in the UK. If i wasn't able to do most of the labour myself which i don't count as an on cost i wouldn't be prepared to pay the true cost of creating a one-off build.

Fuel System

Hi All,
I have been cutting the boat up AGAIN!!! this time in the engine compartment/tank compartment bulkhead this is to gain access to the fuel level sender & fuel connections. The fuel is picked up from the top engine bay end of the tank & is returned to the opposite end of the tank, this is to eliminate the possibility of picking up warm aerated fuel. The bulkhead fittings in the carbon fibre bulkhead closing panel have been epoxyed into position so that making & breaking the joints is a one spanner operation as i won't need to stop the bulkhead fittings rotating in the closing panel, also ground all the imperfections out of the hose fittings & polished them ready for assembly.

Headers

Hi All,
Thought you might like to see a selection of photographs of the re-work of the Ilmor headers. When i ordered the engines i specified 5" taller headers than standard so the exhaust outlets would be above the swim platform but having decided to go with a very high X dimension the rear engine header collectors fouled with the underside of the deck, the easy & cheap solution would be to swap the rear headers with Ilmor with a set of +3.5's but this would have changed the asthetics of the engine bay & the torque characteristics so i decided to have the collectors removed & a new set manufactured dropping the outlet flanges by 1.5".This has involved making 4 swaging dollies out of billet aluminium, the work has been carried out by John & Gary at Bengco who's workmanship is outstanding. They will also be manufacturing the short jacketed tailpipes ready for the slide over carbon tailpipes.

All The Best

Peter

Hi Iain,
It is probably a little known fact that we "old school" engineers cannot function correctly in the workshop without inspiration from glamour calendars If political correctness was ever to get them banned we would all have to retire

Water Pickups

Hi All,
It's been a busy few days, made up a makeshift jig to hold the two water pickup pipes in the right positions so that John & Gary could make the top flange & bracket.Fitted them to the boat then made the slash cuts on the pickup ends.Where the pipes run through the transom i have made a spigot & socket joint which will terminate in 1.25" BSP.All the hose fittings & adaptors have been match bored to eliminate any steps so we shouldn't get any weed hangups

Fuel Hoses

Hi All,
Manufactured all the fuel delivery & return hoses, these are made from antistatic PTFE with a stainless steel overbraid. Each hose is individually tailored for it's mounting position & as each hose has a 90 degree swept elbow at each end the orientation has to be set prior to swaging as you can't adjust them afterwards. As we normally use standard steel ferrels on our hydraulic hose i had to mirror polish the swaging dyes to remove any steel debris as this would have contaminated the stainless steel ferrels & caused them to rust, i also took the additional precaution of mirror polishing the ferrels after swaging.

Water Pumps & Hoses

Hi All,
Spent most of the day converting the water pump & strainer connections from NPT which is a taper thread favoured by a lot of American Companies to BSP parallel which i believe is a much better engineering solution as the connections screw right up to a shoulder.I have also machined all the unnessecary weight off the adaptors & increased their bore size which has reduced their weight by up to 60% & made them look much nicer. In the standard setup the hoses push on to the hose tails & are kept there by a jubilee clip but on this installation i am using antistatic smooth bore PTFE lined hose with an Aramid Fibre Overbraid which will have a stainless steel ferrel swaged on to the end fittings.

Regards

Peter

Throttles & Shifters

Hi All,
Cut the mounting hole & fitted shifter/throttle assembly,i am now in a position to be able to decide cable route & lengths. We should also receive the high capacity trim pumps from oilgear next week which will enable me to finish off the pipework.

Fantastic work here Peter! With you attention to detail are you happy with the quality of the stitching on the seats in the last two photographs?

Perhaps you intend to sort that out yourself as well - if a job is worth doing...
