Cinzano
Hi All,
Had a very eventful day stripping the tab cylinders from Cinzano, had to make some tooling to go round the rod eyes to allow me to press the glands into the cylinder tube to release the pressure on the circlips, had to apply 12 tonnes before i could get the circlips out. My next problem was to get the rods & glands out of the cylinder, as we only have a 3 tonne overhead crane even with mallet assistance this proved inadequate so i fastened the rod end to one fork lift truck & the base to another fork lift & managed to snatch them out. We will re machine the components as necessary to take modern seals then re-assemble & test.

Hi Peter
Your problem's with stripping the trim tab rams is very common and with all the trim rams and some steering rams too, that's why I always stripped and rebuilt them very regularly or at least once a year, it much easer.

Hi Jim,
As you say good maintenance saves loads of grief & increases the reliability of the components. It is my guess that these tabs are probably the originals & don't show any signs of ever being stripped before.Spent the last couple of days completely reconditioning the cylinders, this has involved honing the cylinder bores, polishing the rods, re-machining the glands to take new seals & making polyurethane bushes for the rod ends to replace the original perished rubber ones. We have also supplied new accumulators. The original plan was to modify the original brackets but due to corrosion & ageing of the aluminium i decided to make new ones from billet aluminium.
All The Best

Peter looks like you are doing a great job, in the past I have had to made new the top alley bush's out of stainless steel and fitted the accumulators inside the boat.

I see from your photos Peter of Cinzano CUV that they didn't take my advise and make a 9" or 10" ins Alley box to fit on the transom and move the Drives back further. Well I think a good opportunity missed. !!!!!!

Well I hope Cinzano is all back together because it's due in Southampton at the Sports Boat and RIB show on Saturday:
Another must-see for powerboat racing fans, the British Powerboat Racing Club is bringing along ‘Cinzano’, the 40ft aluminium classic racing powerboat designed by Britain’s Don Shead.
Gee and a few others will be there including Garmin and Will Nurses Cougar with the Fulsers 3B boat hopefully making an appearance with new bushes - Bob Mcarthy will also be bringing down an OCR Bernico - the best bit is it will be free!
I will be there all weekend if anyone comes down say hi!

out of interest was it the Italian raced CUV's that had alley box's fitted as the 41' Follett cars you worked with had surface drives
PS ... I believe last year their was a rumour on here of Follett being purchased and joining in the fun back here ... any news on that front

Hi Jim,
I think time constraints was probably the main reason standoff boxes weren't installed & the Cinzano Boys might have heard a rumour that i am designing a standoff box with variable height adjustment on the move for Carbon Cheetah .I am going to test Carbon Cheetah with the drives transom mounted to start with to gain valuable data.As i have mounted the drives quite high we are having 18" diameter propellors made by Herring with a very high rake to get good bow lift, then the plan is to build the variable height stand off box & compare the data.Do you have any data with & without standoff boxes on the same boat? as i would be really interested.
All The Best

Hi Peter and the interested. !!!
I was asked to give some advise about making the Cinzano go quicker, and the main two solutions I put forward, was to fill and fare the boats bottom and get the drives back further, the solution I suggested and not very expensive was to make one big 10" Aluminium box and weld it to the transom with gussets around it, this boat Cinzano had a Alley box on it originally but only 8" deep, standoff boxes was last solution and very expensive.
It is very important in surface drive to get the props in good clear water.
As for your carbon drive shafts and as you have stated I think cause more problems than they cure.
The 40" Goldrush had a Aluminium box fitted too.
I just thought it was a good opportunity missed.!!!!!! Jimmy Brooker.

No I have no news on Follett at all, nobody tells my whats going on now-days.
Yes Follett did have surface props on shafts the props were 1m 400mm off the transom, and we could adjust the height.

Hi All,
Just a few photographs from loading Cinzano onto her transporter & firing her up for the first time around lunchtime today. She finally left for Ireland at approximately 3.30pm.Unfortunately due to business commitments Carolyn & myself are unable to attend the event in Ireland but we wish the whole crew all the best for the event.

Hello Peter and Carolyn,
Cinzano would never have been in time without your Help!!
Not only that the Input of Yours is making the Engine Bay really look 'the Buisness'. Its not american bling but highest quality and perfection in detail.
Owe you now a big voucher for Carolyn visiting Harvey Nichols (this is for Peter!) Not so shure what I can do for Carolyn though, maybe a Wellness relax day off from technical toys...
Fly to Ireland tomorrow and cant wait to meat the Team.
Best Regards Markus
Not so shure what I should do best for her that

Hunton Ilmor Build
Hi All,
We Have had a really busy 3 weeks working on Cinzano, we are now back in the Midlands catching up on hydraulic repairs but i have still managed to steal a little bit of time to work on Carbon Cheetah.First job was lightening the pressure relief valves, as these were hydraulic valves capable of withstanding 350 bar i was able to machine away most of the excess material leaving a relatively thin wall as we have had 2 bar stainless steel springs made.Next i moved on to mounting the tab and trim pumps & had a quick mock up of the battery isolator switches.
Peter
PS:
Isn't it a shame that the round Ireland race did'nt get more support it would have given Cinzano someone to play with and we might have seen how fast she can go
