Importing outboards from the states

Hi All

Just after some advice really. Has anyone ever imported o/b's from the states.

I am considering upgrading and am toying with the idea of importing a pair of outboards (e.g. pair of nearly new opti's) so that I can sell one and keep the other.

Does anyone have any words of wisdom

i.e. shipping costs, import duty etc

Any advice would be very much appreciated

Cheers - Al

It costs around £400 to fly an engine over plus 10% import duty then vat on total.

If they are a pair then one would be a left handed one - not very popular on thier own!

Cheers Roofer Cfun and Cookee for the info

Sounds like there is more additional cost than I may have considered but that it might still be cost effective.

Tell me cookee, why are left hand rotations less popular, I thought you just needed a different prop.

What difference would it make if I chose to keep the LH motor?

Send a message via MSN to RossM
you would have to sell the RH motor
if you do use the LH engine then you will need to offset the engine or it pumps, batteries etc to the left insted to counter the prop torque.
its also harder to get second hand LH props

In addition to the above - in a performance boat when taking off and landing the boat naturally wants to land on its left side due to the torque - if you have a left handed engine and prop it will want to land on the right - of course it is just a question of getting used to it but another reason why they are generally less valuble.

It is only the gearbox that is left handed by the way - the engine itself still works in the same way, however the way they are designed never be tempted to run them in reverse - it will fail!

Hope the above helps a little,

Anyone with even the most basic understanding of mechanics could look at how a right hand lower works, and realise it wouldn't last more than a few minutes run in reverse....It's all completely wrong.

When I say 'in reverse', I do of course mean, with the opposite rotation propeller, going forwards.
