We have Nitros, new this year, very pleased with them. Comfortable to wear and the intercom bits fitted inside with no problems.

Nitro!
Mine saved my bacon this year!!
Need to keep the quick release strap well lubed or they tend to get a bit corroded.. Also buy spare visors they tend to come off if you stuff it!! ( not a bad thing, at least they don't mess ur face up)
very comfortable & reasonably priced.

I use a nitro at the moment and it's a very comfortable helmet (even though my nose doesn't realy fit!), but having seen a couple wreck themselves over here and reading the dover report I'm considering buying a composite helmet instead, most probably a simpson with a small apeture.
Anyone else got any opinions on this?

James

Ask The Rat his opinion on the Nitro . He was wearing one at Coniston when he flipped. The impact pulled the rivits that hold the strap in place out and the helmet came off .

Why people spend fortunes on there boats and buy a cheap helmet is beyond me !

The forces in volved in a stuff like that would prob rip any strap off, regardless of make,Mr.Rat survived to tell the tale and wants to do it again, allegedly, his head is still intact therefore the Nitro dun its job.Be interesting to see any further comments as i have just bought 4 of them.Wonder what helmet Mr. Fuller was wearing when his helmet came off in his recent underwater exploit?Mr.Rat,what helmet will you be using for Coniston this year?

I was wary of cheap lids, sure they're ACU Gold but apparently they're specifically reinforced in the test areas. I used to race downhill mountainbikes and always got decent motocross lids, and they saved my head many times where a cheaper bike specific one wouldn't have been up to it.

I've bought a Craft RX6 for powerboating, they're composite, and have fully removable lining and padding, unlike the Simpsons. I was very tempted to get a Simpson, but the lining thing and the lack of peripheral vision turned me to the Craft. Riders got it on special order in pearl orange for £225. You're welcome to have a look Larby.

How fast was the Rat going? Dragboat lids don't have neck straps, they're held down onto the lifejacket to prevent 'bucketing'. If the straps hadn't given out then he may have had serious neck injuries. Maybe something worth considering for high speed runs on Coniston

Hi Paul
How thick is the visor ?
Will it survive a hi speed dunking or a hose down ?

Hi Simon

I just had a look, the visor is about 2mm thick, it's got a sturdier release mechanism than the Nitros, hard to say what kind of stuffing it'll put up with though. I'd much rather headbut the dash in the Craft that's for sure!!

Ah yeah, the reason for there being no updates is because there's nothing worth updating due to my laziness and procrastination (a few other commitments also, but mainly the 1st two...) decent weather this weekend should see something worth updating for

Wasn't over impressed with the shock impact of them,a Broken jaw, teeth and eye socket probably wouldn't have happened if the strap hadn't detached itself, you should be allowed to use any colour as in other sports and buy an arai helmet,if I'd had one of them on I'd be able to see wot I'm facking writing !!

I've got a craft rx6 for on my bike - really comfy and I think they look awesome - a bit like the predator's mask.

Only complaint i have is that if the visor's open at speed (35mph obviously??!!) it tends to catch the wind and pull your head back - not something I've had an issue with on other lids!
