Kids and Powerboats

I've a 5 year old who mad keen to go out for a blast, how do you introduce them at that age without them being put off for life.

Any ideas welcome,

How have you guys done this in the past?

I have two daughters, 7yrs and 5yrs and a boy of 3yrs. The first time we went out was from Brixhan to Torquay, nice sunny day and water was flat calm. Took it nice and slow so not to frighten them. They loved it. So any chance i can to take the boat out, you can guarantee they are first on board, they cant get enough.

My two sons started when they were both about 4 and were desperate to get out but the stipulation we made was ONLY when they were confident enough in water and weren't afraid of getting wet. Then we were down FYM for wetsuits and life jackets - you know how cold the Scottish Lochs are so we let them play in the shallow water when they weren't in the boat so they soon got used to it - big difference to a heated swimming pool

Once they had been out once or twice they wanted out on the toys so we took them out on the ringo (one at a time) - again, slow and steady.

Of course they soon got bored with that so the speed was slowly increased - now its a case of try to keep them at a sensible speed as they both seem as keen to do as much damage to the other one while they are out on the biscuits.

Dont try any sharp turns - when I first bought my Ring back home we took it out with my eldest and due to the totally different driving experience from my old boat I hooked it very slightly and it frightened him so he would only go out when we kept the speed down - took about a year before he got his confidence back.

Now they are both addicted and to be honest its great when teenagers have something in common with their dad!!!

Started my daughter boating at 18 months old on Windermere, mother wasn't to happy but daughter loved it. Moved onto jetski's at four and now she's nearly twelve she like's to go faster than me.

Brilliant and thanks everyone, so my plan is step by step,

Step 1 today introduce him to boats in a familiar surroundings and show him him a 15" mid and a 3 pointer (Today)

Step 2 Saturday take him fishing on the Dory to get used to the open Sea and engines,

Step 3 Sunday out in Apache at a slow rate of knots,

Hopefully he will get hooked, not a real hook coz that puts me off too.

I was doing some speed records up at Windermere in '02.

Vicky Crump had a K Class boat up there.

I then asked Vicky if she would take my 7 year old son up and down the measured kilo.

She said OK, and terrified father looked on from the edge of the lake.

Upshot of it all was Harry was presented with certificates at the RYA Ball, and now has no interest in boats at all.

However, if you are racing at Cowes this year, and have a problem, Harry is your man - He loves being an organiser!

Like others have said; stop as soon as they ask you to or if they show any nervousness. Flat water & sensible speeds are the key.

My lad was about 3 & my girl about 5 when they first drove my Fletcher (sitting on my lap). The lad actually enjoyed it so much he fell asleep! He's now six & has started water-skiing.

That 3-pointer looks like brilliant fun.

If you want a some time in my ( dare i say it) RIB! give me a shout, i will show you how to rig a kill cord so that both you and kid have kill cords that separate if either goes a swimming.

We running the Honda Youth RIB challenge at club but for 8 years old and above, every 2nd or so Wednesdays tide dependant, and we now now have GAS BBQ to use afterwards.

Horrible weather this week, going out in boat hopefully tomorrow afternoon, unless Work or Weather catches me!

Anstruther Lifeboat Gala this Saturday 1200 - 1600 hrs. incase you didnt know.

Is this the Real Gala or the Kiddy on one, I went to one last year only to find the real one with the helicopter is in August,

I'll take you up on the R-I-B for the wee un, see you this week as I'm off for another week or so.

29th Lifeboat Gala day

A full day of action and entertainment around the harbour

The day’s proceedings begin at 12noon with the traditional firing of the RNLI maroon followed by a street parade along the harbour front by many of the exhibitors attending the event.

The afternoon’s programme will also include an RNLI Beach Triathlon and an air sea rescue display involving Anstruther Inshore and All Weather Lifeboats, Kinghorn lifeboat, HM Coastguard, First Response, a local fishing vessel and a Seaking Helicopter from RAF Lossiemouth.

The Anstruther Lifeboat crew and other volunteers will also be serving up some delicious food including Burgers, Kippers,
Hotdogs, Pancakes / Strawberries & Cream, Tea / Coffee and other refreshments.

Some of the exhibitors confirmed so far include:
Army Careers, Alexander Cooke Steam Engine’s, Fire Brigade Ladder Platform, Heartstart, Fairground attractions, Agricultural Tractors, Police,
HM Coastguard, Kingdom Falconry, L&B Police Boat, Sea Cadets, Puppet Show, Raynet, React, Royal Navy, Secret Bunker, Classic Cars, First Response and many more.

Entertainment will be provided by:
Kilrymont Accordion Band, Milnberg Jazz Band and various dance groups
from around Fife.


The gala committee are still looking for teams of 4 persons to enter their Beach Triathlon.
The entry fee is £10 per team, persons interested should contact the Lifeboat Station on 01333 310526 or e-mail the committee at ansterlifeboat.galaday@virgin.net

All proceeds from the event go directly to the RNLI.


Looks like the real thing ! The Anstruther Muster is the August Thingy that is 3 day event, laster lifeboat gala was low key because of the refurb of lifeboat station.

Give me a shout, and i will arrange taking you out in boat.
