the tilt tube is solid on all steering, but yea the wingplate is what makes it heavier, but the front mount seastar has another stainless rod and the brackets which connect the tilt tube rod to the rod which the ram operates on.
i would of said that the side mount is no more than 3 kg heavier.

You could also make the wing plate hollow (if you picture a car wishbone, like that,the middle machines out which would dramatically lessen weight.

The tilt tube isnt solid on all steering the standard Merc part is hollow. The other bar you refer to on Seastar is solid though and passes through the hollow tilt tube. As its diameter is near enough the same as that of the hole through the tilt tube I guess there's not much difference between the two systems here. However the small aluminium brackets on the Seastar ram are considerably lighter than a 10mm thick stainless wing plate. And the alluminium construction of the Seastar ram will be considerably lighter than the all stainless steel construction of the Latham/Mayfair/Imco side ram setups. That said though their stainless steel construction does make the flux dispersal better
