Macho Outboard Sounds

I think this will be a thread we all will be able to relate to.
When I was a youngster mk2 escorts were the hip rally car with their horny twin side draught webers or delorto carbs, the only thing that came near in modern rallying was the e30 M3 BMW, however when it comes to outboards out of the V6s which sounds best it need not be modern just the most hot induction note that turns your legs to jelly!

Nothing to do with boats but the best sounding engine I've ever heard was Prosts V12 Ferrari at the British GP in 1990. Obviousley Mansell had one too and they were still V12's when I went in 91 and 92 too but the thing that sticks in my mind most was 1990 when Mansell had retired and Prost was well out in front. I was at Woodcote (before they put the complex in) and Prost would come under the Bridge round Woodcote and then off down the start and finish straight out of site . With no other cars in the vincinity all you could hear was the screaming V12 echoing up from between the grandstands. The Ferarri was the only car to have the sequential gearbox at the time too so unlike the others there no slight pause, no drop of in volume, just a instant change in engine note as he pulled another gear. The other cars sounded awesome too but that V12 Ferrari engine note sent a tingle down your spine, like God farting through a saxaphone . Haven't heard anything that good since and probably never will.

I thought this was about OUTBOARD engine sounds! But seeing as others are diversifying - I would have to say it´s a tie for me between the old Kiekhaefer Aeromarine motors and the 4 valve Lamborghinis. Can´t decide! But then again the start of any race with a lot of motors is spine tingling.................as is a top fueler at Santa Pod...........as is the clip I´m going to find again of the Renault V10 in an engine shop on a test bench with red hot exhausts....etc

Best engine noise has got to be, as wild thing said, a BDA echoing around a forrest on a crisp winter day.

Hopefully in for a few days of it as well as i'm off to watch the Rogar Albert Clark rally this weekend.

Thing is lots of engines sound awesome but some sound musical with it and the V12 Ferrari had that extra something.

Turbo motors sound awesome but will never sound as good as a NA motor that been allowed to breath properly. In my experiance the best sounding engines have a cylinder count divisble by 6. Just listen to a screaming bike 4 cylinder engine, sounds awesome no doubt about it, but a 6 (particularly a straight 6) makes music. Also the more cylinders an engine has the more compresion strokes in one revolution and so the cooler the starter motor sounds when starting the motor up.

Off all the cars owned by me and my mates which includes Burty's 440 hp Cossie, a Megabusa and a 5.0 mustang with Nascar mufflers (or something) all of which sounded mental, the best sounding car was a 3.0 litre 24V straight 6 carlton with big holes cut in the air box and an exhaust that ended at the back axle as the back box had fallen off. Not as loud and not as awesome sounding as the others but it just sounded glorious. Sounded better than Burty's M3 too that was also a straight 6 but sounded more thrashy due to all that Double VANOS nonsense!!!

That is the sound the renault V10 would make going round monza using the telemetry from the circuit programmed into the dyno

Found this on youtube. You can clearly hear the difference between the Ferrari's and the V10 powered cars. The V10's sound flatter in comparison to the Italian V12's that have that extra something on top. The clip gives you an idea but doesn't do it justice, you have to have heard it live to really appreciate it. It goes right through you and makes the hair on the back on your neck stand up (before we get any comedians its just the hair on the back of your neck that stands up and nothing else okay )!!!
